Kinda wanting to scratch that post apocalyptic itch but have played Fallout 1 and 2 to death. I've heard 3 is pretty bad. Should I just skip it and go straight to New Vegas? Also, do I need any patches/mods for either game? I know Fallout 2's Restoration Project unofficial patch was amazing

New Vegas is definitely better, but doing it first will make it harder to go through FO3. You may want to do it chronologically for that reason alone. However, you can probably make FO3 better with patches, so there's that. (There's also one that connects FO3 and New Vegas' worlds, IIRC.)

New Vegas is much better

But 3 is good for what it is

Play 3 first. You'll appreciate New Vegas a lot more. If you go from New Vegas to 3 you're gonna hate it

3 is a classic, but New Vegas just improves on it tenfold. Also New Vegas feels like a proper sequel to 1 and 2.

None of the major titles are bad. If you liked fallout 1 and 2, then you should definitely check out fallout 3 to see where they went with the series.

I played all three of the recent titles last year and had a great time with them. The one that disappointed me was fallout 4. It was fun, but not as good as the others.

New Vegas really is the best one in the series, though.

This. It would be more difficult to play 3 later after youre used to the QoL improvements of later titles. While the story isnt as good in 3, the setting is awesome and its absolutely worth a playthrough imo

Four hours and 29 mods later

Think FO3 is ready to go lol. Took awhile because the game won't even load on Windows 10 without modding xD

Good choice FO3 is a solid game but NV really shines after you played 3.

I'd say to start with Fallout 3, and if you like that then try New Vegas.

NV is rated highly among the Fallout fanbase, but 3 is a great beginner's game as well. Very open, decent mood. Not great story, but it's pretty good otherwise.

Edit: oh hey, you chose Fallout 3. Nice, lol.

If you plan on playing both, do 3 first. There are enough quality of life improvements in New Vegas that makes 3 difficult to play after.

Fallout New Vegas is much better. fo3 is just really tedious and poorly executed, and won't even run on Windows 10.

It's a bit jarring to think about repair, reading more, general improvements but it's sort of like going from Skyrim to Morrowind.

If you can handle that and remember it's the first jump into 3D for the series, you'll enjoy it.

3 gives off a better first impression and depending on if you loved the earlier games and want actual rollplaying elements in it, 3 can peter out pretty quickly. NV takes longer to get going and its world comes off as more "dull", but has a lot of the aspects an old school fallout player would like.

basically NV for veterans, 3 for new players.

Played thru the Vault 101 section and it seems OK so far. I can already see the benefits of some of the mods I installed lol. Only problem I have right now is that the Gamepad controls seem clunky. Don't really like playing stuff like this with mouse and keyboard but I may need to give it a shot. Super inaccurate sniping irks me

It might be the archaic engine showing age. The gun gameplay in 3 is certainly a bit off.

3's gunplay has always been subpar; Beth bizarrely decided to dredge up the worst aspect of Morrowind in that your gun skill determines both damage and accuracy, often in spite of your personal FPS skills. There are few things more infuriating than lining up your sniper shot, watching the bullet travel into the body of your target, and still not having it register as a hit. Which of course encourages over-reliance on VATs, which is even more broken at the opposite end of the spectrum. Two things that NV fixed quite handily.

You're right. Fallout 3 and Morrowind are more dice roll based which can be weird for some and even frustrating.
