I read recently that dreamworks animators that werent doing a good job on Prince of Egypt got reassigned to the film the studio didnt have nearly as much faith in, Shrek.

Speaking of not Disney, one of my favorites is The Swan Princess. Just watched it again the other day.

That's some nostalgic not Disney. I have no idea if it's still good.

It mostly holds up. Rothbart is a pretty competent villain as well.

I saw that in theater. IIRC, my friend and I ended up with a private screening because it was a matinee on a school day. I remember Oprah plugging it.

I feel like Prince of Egypt got screwed over by the subject matter in some ways.

Then again, I couldn't even be bothered to watch The Road to El Dorado, in spite of that probably being the best/most mainstream Dreamworks animated movie from that early period, so I probably wasn't going to watch Prince of Egypt regardless of what it was about.

I had kinda glossed over Prince of Egypt because it was based on a Christian story, which is usually enough to make me not care about something (and is why I hadn't got into Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat sooner, which was pretty incredible other than some of the silly musical genre-sampling). However, after seeing "Playing with the Big Boys" pop up in a top 10 Not-Disney villain song list, I kinda got interested in the film... although I *still* haven't seen it.

As for whether or not it's truly obscure, I don't know. Most not-Disney animated films kinda fly under the radar and there are also some lesser-known Disney films.

In addition to the above, I recall liking Thumbelina. In general, though, my fave Don Bluth animated film was Anastasia.

Kek. Heavy Metal was like Fantasy on crack (well, I guess *more* crack)

Also passed on Road to El Dorado, but I wasn't really feeling a lot of animated films at the time. Disney had really raised the bar for animated films and, ultimately, couldn't even manage to stay up to its standard at the time.

When I was a kid I couldn't get enough of this scene in Thumbelina for some reason.

And Charo as a frog was fun.

My favorite non Disney animated film is Secret of NIMH.
