shouldn't have a strong say in the parts of the country where there is more to do on a Friday night than watch your nephew Cletus' football game then go to a bar your nephew can't even walk into where you know literally every single person there because all of them went to your high school in the same building and now suffer from the same brand of alcoholism and drug abuse rampant in trailer park country

I've never understood the outright fetish some places in the US have with high school sports.

It's a bunch of greasy, smelly teenagers running around a field.

But some places by stadiums and shit for it

because it's literally the only thing keeping those places afloat

you build a stadium for your local HIGH SCHOOL teams because that's the only way you drive traffic in or out of the town

because there's literally no other reason to be there than... just being there at this point

Small town USA is one of the biggest sources of prejudice and misinformation in the United States

Not SUBURBAN, mind you
Literally these remote towns with 3000 people, and all of them attend the high school football games

you must live in one of these places

guess it happens more often than i think on the internet since that's the only way those folks can ever get any information outside of their own loosely related neighbors

Well what else are they gonna do? Go to the fucking Rolling Stones Concert?

Small towns are definitely boring but they're just for people for like to live in silence. I get it. Just because you don't doesn't mean you have to be a complete piece of shit about it.

i've also got more people around me physically and there's public transportation to get around
all the big music and theater acts stop by seattle or chicago
they both have football teams (one HAD a basketball team too, alas)

i'm not even FROM seattle or chicago lmao

Seoul? Why?

because it's a sprawling INTERNATIONAL HUB absolutely BRIMMING with culture and entertainment
also it's WAY safer than any American city and cost of living is not TOO high for Americans (it's higher than it used to be as Korean economy gets stronger)

Why you gotta bash on Cleetus? If he wants to drink Coors Light at the bar with his same two friends he's had since high school, how does that impact you in any way? How is that any different than you drinking at the local craft brewery with your friends?
Cleetus can fix your car in exchange for a 6 pack. Cleetus will help you build that shed you've been putting off. Cleetus will attend your funeral. Small towns are about community and depending on one another. Its not as bad as you make it seem.

Are you trying to say in a round about way that you are upset that Trump was elected and it's the fault of people like Cleetus?

Cleetus has nothing going for him and wanted someone to come along and say that "hey man, I know your life sucks, but I'll do what I can to make sure you still have a job to go to so that you can drink Coors Light."
Rather than, "we gotta make sure people can use whatever bathroom they want."

I loved living in Chicago but going outside could sometimes be pretty sketchy
especially where I was living (as a poor college student near the south side)

downtown and surrounding areas are fun
suburban chicago is sketchy af lol but i'd prefer the chance of getting shot at by Latin Kings over living in "high school football is literally our only source of income" town

I think that saying that it "IS the economy" is a huge exaggeration, but that being said, I think that Middle America has a problem with its culture. This is one of the problems. Middle America obsesses over youth sports, especially high school sports. As an intellectual who grew up in Middle America, this drove me crazy.

Here's one example I'll give about the obsession with youth sports and how it negatively impacts our society. At my high school, every Monday morning there were announcements. They always revolved around sports. The guy who gave them was the Athletics Director even. Maybe a couple times a year another activity would get mentioned, like when the band is playing at the state band competition or something like that. Other than that, all sports related. There were almost zero academic announcements of any kind.

Go walk around the school and look in the trophy cabinets. They are all sports related. Even the music trophies aren't placed in trophy cabinets but instead just sit on top of shelves in the band/choir/orchestra room. Go in the gym and you see all these giant banners that display years that a sports team won the state championship.

Are there any trophies for academics anywhere in the school? No, I know of zero academic trophies located at any place in the school. Also when it comes to the choices of extra-curricular activities available, you almost exclusively have basically music, drama, and sports. Where are the programming teams and robotics teams? They rarely even exist. The closest thing was this thing called Envirothon which was kind of like an environmental science contest. We got 2nd place in the state actually my junior year, but of course there were no announcements, no trophies put in trophy cases, and the vast majority of the school had no idea that Envirothon even existed.

We push kids towards youth sports as if it's the most important thing in all of society. In reality, only a tiny tiny fraction of them will ever have careers in anything related to the sports they play. The students are being pushed into focusing on the wrong things. It's no shock that the US is falling rapidly behind when it comes to math, science, and reading scores. Countries like Poland and Croatia are now beating us, even though people used to flee these countries less than 30 years ago.

America is failing itself.

You do realize that the attitude expressed by TC is exactly why liberal costal elitists, no matter how many millions of them there are shouldn't have a strong say in parts of the country (90% of it) where they look down on everyone from there and couldn't begin to give a damn about either.

So when people, and I'm sure TC is one of them, cry about the EC come election time. This attitude. This exact thing is why it's there and never going anywhere.

This is why we should return to a more states' rights oriented system as opposed to a system where the federal government runs loads of things. Think of how the average person spends way more in federal taxes than what they send to their state.

It's probably better if we let states run most things at this point, otherwise the coasts and Middle America will keep clashing.
