Keep the personable attitude -- that seems to be a strong quality for you, and if that means capturing the times you vocalize when you're buying time to say your next thing then cool. Over-rehearsing has its problems too,

Just sharing advice I had from a public speaking class. It's a thing I think would help you, but that's not to say you have to laser-focus on every next word either so don't let that well-meaning advice mess with your strengths.

I actually really like that you showed me this, even though his set up (and everything else) is hundreds of times what mine is, I think I'm much more effective at trimming the fat. He might "um" less than me, but the words he said that he didnt need to say are legion. It's actually fairly encouraging

The idea is to teach people the basics of chinese radicals with handy pnemonics under the (somewhat) guise of not knowing chinese.

It probably sounds stupid if you're not familiar with chinese, but the truth is theres hundreds of radicals you need to learn to understand thousands of characters, and most educational sources don't really give you the tools to remember them all. My hope is that a dopey american poorly explaining them is a good way to make them stick in your mind better.

Mnemonics are the way to go, but have you heard of the Heisig method? It's a super effective form of mnemonic memorization

The key differences are that the reader comes up with their own mnemonic phrases, and you learn in a very specific order that lets you use previous mnemonics to build new ones.

Basically, if you're sitting there telling the viewer what mnemonics to use, it's not gonna work nearly as well as them coming up with their own mnemonics. That's why the vagina stuff is bad on both the comedic and educational levels. I can't see the vagina so for me it's not gonna work at all, even though it works for you just fine.

I definitely appreciate that, and I'm glad you pointed it out, but my ultimate goal is not to be the premier source of language learning, but a supplemental sugar pill to the whole process. Language learning is a multi pronged attack, and Im trying to be the farmer in the back of the battlefield waving his pitchfork. I def wont do the most damage but I want to get a few good stabs in.

I mean from the sound of it, I just need to workshop my material a bit. I would like my stuff to be easy to watch, something that you don't have to think too hard about, but you still pick up an odd phrase or character here and there. Thats why I want my episodes to be around 5 minutes, they should be popcorn to the main course.

I watched the whole thing. It was a little funny. I don't know any Chinese but I know a lot of the characters from Japanese, but the pronunciation and meaning is different sometimes so it was interesting

Despite my critiques, I could see this evolving into something decent. If you're going to stick with blue humor, use it sparingly so it contains more of a punch and doesn't overstay its welcome. Something more informative with witty jokes would be entertaining, but as is it's pretty much just bad Bob Saget jokes.

Also is there a reason you are sitting on the stairs? The premise and your laid back style would work well by a fireplace or a cozy den or something.

I used the stairs because its the brightest place in my house. I bought two lamps though so we will see if I can improve on that.

Also thanks for the encouragement! I think it takes a long time for most people to find their grove when making videos but if my starting place is "bad bob sagat" or "throwaway office character" I feel like I might be able to mold that into something worth watching
