It's a super effective form of mnemonic memorization https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remembering_the_Kanji_and_Remembering_the_Hanzi The key differences are that the reader comes up with their own mnemonic phrases, and you learn in a very specific order that lets you use previous mnemonics to build new ones. Basically, if you're sitting there telling the viewer what mnemonics to use, it's not gonna work nearly as well as them coming up with their own mnemonics. That's why the vagina stuff is bad on both the comedic and educational levels.
