Swedish startup Gavagai AB, a language technology company that originated at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science, has mastered 40 human languages with its language analysis software. Now, researchers from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology are teaming up with Gavagai AB to take on the language of dolphins, in a project undoubtedly focused as much on testing and expanding the systems capabilities as deciphering the thoughts of dolphins.

The team will monitor bottlenose dolphins in a wildlife park and use Gavagais artificial intelligence (AI) language analysis technology to decode the sounds and, if all goes according to plan, compile a dictionary of dolphin language. The team is confident that theyll be able to do this, thanks not only to the AI capabilities of the Gavagai AB system, but also to the availability of more dolphin data, larger computational resources, and newer recording methods.

We hope to be able to understand dolphins with the help of artificial intelligence technology, KTH adjunct professor and Gavagai co-founder Jussi Karlgren said in an interview with Bloomberg. We know that dolphins have a complex communication system, but we dont know what they are talking about yet.

Dolphin: There is a realm of existence so far beyond your own you cannot even imagine it. I am beyond your comprehension. I am Sovereign. Rudimentary creatures of blood and flesh... you touch my mind, fumbling in ignorance; incapable of understanding. "Dolphin"... a label created by the Protheans to give voice to their destruction. In the end, what they chose to call us is irrelevant... we simply "are".

It will be coherent because it's a human designed algorithm that will translate it into something that people can understand.

I just imagined a future where we've colonized our oceans because global warming flooded most of the world.

In this future, the ocean police force would have dolphins instead of German Shepherds. And the dolphins would ride shotgun in the patrol subs and they'll have a dolphin translator machine in each sub, and the dolphin officer and human officer will exchange small talk about that bitch in HDR.

How crazy would it be if we started talking to them, and they told us about how they used to live on land and had a super advanced civilization technologically, and then they realized how much better living in the ocean is than on the surface so they all collectively decided to alter their DNA to have fins and be able to hold their breath an extremely long to to be able to live under water.

They would think of us as stupid land dwellers who are unsophisticated idiots and just laugh at us. They probably solved string theory already.

What if they started negotiating with us for mathematical and scientific knowledge?

if that were true, i imagine they wouldnt want to negotiate at all given how badly we've fucked up their new home.

Yeah, but how do heat up their hot pockets if they live underwater. Not to mention, I bet it gets soggy. If anything, I laugh at them and their soggy bread.

This is not about teaching dolphins language (not that this was particularly successful in gorillas), but "translating dolphin language". First, this assumes that dolphins communicate using something akin to language, and then on top of that assumes we have the labels for that language! You can't do supervised learning without labels.

It's just one of these really out there claims. It doesn't make much sense.
