vanilla is so fucking bad lmao, how do people think this? i say this as someone who's been playing since it came out, vanilla is the worst iteration of the game (only thing that comes close is end of cata).

Update: I made a Hunter and I'm playing on the 'Normal' realm/server of Cairn. What I want to know is why the "new player" servers are all PVP :/ Oh well.

It's interesting how the game just sort of tosses you right in. There's like 20 seconds of intro dialogue and then you're asked to kill 8 worgs. Right out the gate, fetch quests. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, it is an older MMO so it'll be more utilitarian than something like SWTOR. I'm only level 6, but I got a cape and it looks neat :D

I will say that I've seen some really awesome looking mounts just in the starting area alone. My favorite was this phoenix looking mount that glowed gold and purple and left colorful trails in its animations. Very cool.

Anyone got more advice? I heard being a hunter class was actually a pretty useful beginner's class.

Role on an RP realm like Wyrmrest Accord or Moonguard. Both servers have actual communities. Really it doesn't matter what server you pick. Cross Realm Zone has eliminated server communities since you can play with people from another server. On RP servers you only play with people from other RP servers and in towns only see people from your own server.

Perascamin posted...
If you're going to play though, I suggest choosing a high population realm so you can interact with a lot of people. To this end, chose like

If Alliance, choose the realms: Dalaran, Stormrage, Moon Guard, or Wyrmrest Accord

If Horde, choose the realms: Area 52, Blacrock, Dalaran, or Illadin

Os this a joke post? WrA is primarily Horde. Alliance are small.

"New player" servers are just low population ones. You can safely ignore that designation.

Don't turn using your keyboard. You turn much more slowly. Instead, hold right click and turn that way. In the same vein, backing up with the S key is much slower than simply 90 degrees and strafing left/right to go "backwards." You can strafe left and right by holding the right mouse button and going left or right.

For hunters specifically, open your spellbook and look at the bottom for your Pet tab. For some reason, Blizzard hid a lot of pet abilities in there rather than putting them on the pet bar. You can arrange them however you like on your pet/action bars, but the one you should look for is called Growl. This ability is autocast on default, meaning your pet will taunt enemy mobs, forcing them to attack it. This is useful when you play solo because the enemies are attacking your pet rather than you. In group content, however, you want to make sure you right click this ability to turn off its autocasting. Tanks tend to dislike aggro going all over the place because hunter pets keep stealing it.

Yup, that's it. Guess it'll be a while before I can get one of my own :P

Yeah, when the tutorial popped up with that control scheme I found it really cumbersome and was thankfully surprised that the mouse method worked. I have KOTOR to thank for that (since I first used it there, and then SWTOR had it, so I figured why not try it here).

Gotcha, this will be important information going forward. I dunno if I'll get far enough that I'm grouping with other players but knowing this is valuable. I appreciate it!

With Hunters, you can change the Talents of your Pet so they can either be a tank pet, or a DPS pet. Hunters and Warlocks make good beginner classes, both have Pets.

You can actually join the group finder at level 15. I've not done any low-level dungeons since the recant rebalancing, so I don't know how difficult they are.

get used to it, questing doesnt get much more interesting until you hit the WoD expansion area at like level 90

at level 15 you will get to choose a specialization, and this is where the class gets interesting. once you're there check out icy-veins.com for tips on how your rotation of spells works.

also when you join a dungeon, dont forget to turn off your pet's taunt. it will mess with the tank maintaining threat otherwise

Don't pick survival as it's rotational is fairly complex. If youre rolling beast master turn off your pets taunt or face yourself being kicked from PUGs.

Sooooort of. For whatever reason, hunters are one of (if not the most) popular class, so there are a correspondingly large number of bad hunters. Off the top of my head, there are also a few specific hunter traits that make/made people dislike them:

- The autocast Growl that I mentioned above.
- Not controlling your pet. For instance, if there's a shortcut in a dungeon that involves jumping off a ledge, your pet won't do that with you. It'll instead pathfind around the "correct" route, pulling every mob along the way.
- The iconic "hunter weapon." For the longest time, hunters could (and indeed should have) equip both a melee and a ranged weapon. This, along with some wonky itemization in the hunter class, meant that hunters would roll on weapons that were sort of useful to them, sometimes winning them over classes that would get much more benefit from it. A hunter winning an intellect staff over a mage, for example. With more sensible itemization and new weapon restrictions, this isn't really a thing anymore.

It's funny. My favorite WoW memories are probably of vanilla PvP. It was obviously unbalanced as hell and had all sorts of issues but that's what made it hilarious. So many times I'd go into some absurdly long AV and solo cap towers and defend them by myself against entire groups of people. Or if I had a buddy with me we could have that tower on lock for hours just the two of us. It wasn't balanced and it wasn't fair but it was awesome. Well, I mean, it was awesome then. Could never do something like that now. Have neither the time nor the patience. But back in the day it was quite the fun experience.
