IMO the N64 is the company's worst time.

I am a Sega fan but most people didn't say that they played video games during the Nes and SNES era, they played Nintendo games!

Enter Sony Playstation and of all sudden Nintendo really is just for kids, and they have never truly recovered from this.

N64

Id even put it behind the Wii U

Its top 10 or so match up equally or even favorably to the others, but theres a humongous drop off after 20 or so

It's between the N64 and the Gamecube

Nintendo 64's best were higher, but the Gamecube had more good games.

People disliking the N64 is baffling to me. Best multiplayer console, plus had arguably the best 3D Platformer and FPS ever.

It's close for me between Wii and Wii U for worst console. Wii had some fun gimmicks like Everybody Votes, and Mario Kart Wii is one of my favorites in the series, though Wii U has (for now) arguably the 2nd-best Smash game, and other good Mario series titles (Mario Party 10, 3D World, Game & Wario). With the Switch, it's too early to know exactly where it lies but I think most people would agree that with Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, and a new Smash game already upcoming, it's probably above the Wii and Wii U. Overall I think I'd go:

N64 > GameCube > NES > SNES > Switch > Wii U > Wii

The quality of the Nintendo 64 drops after 10 games or so.

Btw for me it's uhh

SNES > NES > Gamecube >> N64 > Wii

Haven't played Wii U or Switch but would expect Switch to slot between Gamecube and N64 and Wii-U to be last.

Pretty much every console since SNES has had the small library issue though. Not really something to hold against the N64 in particular imo.

Its a relative thing.

Like even compared to the GameCube, Wii U, and above-shovelware Wii library, its still small.

And on top of that it holds up the worst

Nah I disagree on this point but it's possible I just hold the N64's library in higher regard (or the others in lower regard)

Holding up the worst I guess I can sorta agree with but a lot of why I like the N64 (to the extent I do) is the more unique titles. Stuff like Blast Corps and Iggy's Reckin Balls, which hold up better because they haven't really been "done better" like you could maybe argue for stuff like Mario Kart or whatever.

Thats totally fair. I just think the other consoles also have such unique experiences. Personal preference though, obviously.

I like Gamecube a lot but it's hard to name many titles on it I enjoy that I find particularly unique. It's possible I was looking in the wrong places but I mostly just think it executes well on the titles I like. Wii on the other hand has a lot of unique titles but they're not enjoyable. Of course "holding up" is much less a problem for those two cause most of the stumbling points for 3D gaming had been mostly ironed out by the Gamecube generation.

?? GoldenEye and Perfect Dark are still considered two of the best console FPSes ever. I "actually play FPS games" and would put them near the top.

I guess you don't like FPS in your FPS.

They just don't really hold up. They were too ambitious and the tech wasn't there yet. Like for console FPS players at the time (like myself, for the record) it wasn't obvious since they didn't know better, but like, play anything from the PS2 generation on and go back to the N64 FPS and they're practically unplayable.

Haven't played half of those, didn't like the other half

So the answer is partially I wasn't playing the games at least.

I've played a good amount of Timesplitters 2 & 3, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, and probably some others I can't recall, and GoldenEye + Perfect Dark still hold up, despite the lower framerate. The game design was that good.

I mean you can believe that I guess and I can't stop you. I just don't think you're not a tremendous minority there at this point. Like I'd be really surprised if those games were really in the discussion these days among people who are actually fans of any FPS games from the past 15 years.

Yeah I wasn't trying to say "you're wrong" just that "I like Gamecube a lot but it's hard to name many titles on it I enjoy that I find particularly unique" was what I said so it makes sense I didn't think of like Luigi's Mansion or Crystal Chronicles.

But you are right that they are unique at least

But related I'm pretty sure I'd like Pikmin and Eternal Darkness if I'd ever played em.

I've been spreading Lost Kingdoms love for a long time!

well, 2 is better than 1 but 1 is still cool and they change things up quite a bit in between... LK2 unfortunately does make the capturing system less accessible though

also props to digi for also spreading Lost Kingdoms love
