FYI, nothing in the US constitution said that there has to be only two major parties. the founding fathers only created the document, they didn't found the two party system. heck George Washington got elected so easily there wasn't even an opposing party in all honesty.

However, they did create a system by which two parties is the only logical outcome.

Not that I think that's that big of a deal because each party has 'smaller' parties within it (Evangelicals, tea partys, libertarians, etc. are all Republicans despite having vastly different priorities -- something parliamentary systems deal with).

Not to the extent of literally keeping the entire government shut down for two whole years.

Also, the moderate left tends to be more reasonable than the moderate right, and will not take kindly to such behaviour from Democrats (whereas moderate right may very well continue supporting Republicans even if they did exactly what you're proposing here). Of course, the extremes on both sides wouldn't care anyway.

I'm definitely not saying they'll go Republican, but expect to see the Democrats popularity fall in favor of perhaps the Greens, or maybe an entirely new left-wing party.

There was no question dodge. I'm not that guy, but I'd say the same thing regardless of party.

The US government is at its best when it's doing nothing. When one party has a majority, bad things tend to happen. When both parties have equal power and have to work together, either nothing gets done or only the best of both worlds gets through.
