What if there's no profit in running Amtrak? It would cease to exist, and we'd lose something that despite being imperfect is still a good thing for America.

I can't decide if what they're saying is fair or if they're delusional.

On the one hand, I understand the need for affordable housing, more bus routes, more jobs. But on the other hand, I also understand that affordable housing isn't something that you can just snap your fingers and get. Someone needs to build that shit.

How can they demand well-paying construction jobs and then also demand affordable housing? If the state is using tax dollars to pay construction workers a good wage, then the cost of the house they produce will necessarily have to be at least the cost of the labor+materials. Which could still be expensive.

Yeah, it's a shame that they refuse to rally behind investment into infrastructure unless it's implemented as a wealth redistribution measure that benefits solely the poorest of the poor. Imagine being so against pragmatism that you bite the hand that feeds and force everyone to be worse off.

Basically demonstrating why communism could never work.

It was a 0.5% increase to sales tax that increased to 1.0% in 5 years.

Which would have been about $75-$150 annually. The average taxpayer would have saved more than that in reduced fuel costs from traffic.

And this is exactly why we need to treat these projects as investments into our society. It's one of the best investments we can make, actually, because it immediately increases the efficiency with which products and services and people make their way around town...and it also provides employment opportunities with the state. All around a good thing, for very little cost to the individual taxpayer.

I doubt you have any clue on how to spend tax dollars.

California has some if not the highest taxes in the States, do you know why that is.

Are you seriously trying to defend John_Galt? I figured I'd ask since we're asking irrelevant questions.

Doesn't matter what you think of the man, it's a waste of tax payer money that ultimately falls onto citizens that don't in any way benefit from it.

So what was the point of asking about California? Your mind was already made up and you were just looking to defend your homeboy.

Also you apparently don't understand how taxes work either.

Yeah you clearly don't understand how California acquired the highest sales and income tax in the country if you think wasting money on all sorts of crap that doesn't really benefit citizens isn't going to require a raise in taxes to pay for all of it.

Cleveland oddly has a really awesome public transportation system. You can get anywhere in the city proper in a reasonable amount of time and getting to downtown has multiple bus/train options. Busses are generally clean and trains are well patrolled by the transit police. I love it.

Because of that, those that choose to drive don't have to sit in gridlock. Even during peak time traffic never actually stops. It's pretty great in that regard.

I've been to other cities where this was not the case. Things never ran on time and were dirty. I think a lot of people's preconceptions with it are built on bad experiences. It can actually be nice.

Some areas just can't have that many cars driving or traffic congestion would reach quintupling your commute, if not more.

The greater part of this problem is everyone trying to get into or out of town all at the same time.
Gridlock at 8AM, tumbleweeds at 10. Repeat again at 5PM.

Well, yeah, but it's not like we have a choice in that matter- if you have to work at 9AM, you're going to be on the road at 8AM.

If (most) every employer wants business to start between 7 and 10AM, then everyone is going to be on the roads from 6:30 to 9:30 for 3 hours of impressive congestion and accidents (I swear to God accidents happens on I-376W every fucking day). That's just how it is- the commuters don't exactly set the time table for this, the reasons for the commute (employers) do.

I suppose we could also just leave our residences 1-2 hours early and just wait around until it's time for work to start, but at that point, I'd rather just do the forty minute trip on the train instead of playing my Switch or something in my car in a parking lot until it's time to go to work.

Meh. I thought we were supposed to have teleportation modules and jetpacks and shit come the 2000s- the fuck ever happened to that.

Edit: I do remember the water jetpacks, and apparently there's this dude running around calling himself Iron Man now. So that's pretty neat.

The problem is that Tennessee doesn't have an income tax, so they have to get their tax revenue from somewhere else, like a sales tax. And people don't like paying taxes.

Why can't they use the current tax revenue to build do this project? It would probably take longer, but it would still get done.

There's also the fact that Big Rigs / Over Weight Trucks that are over the legal Federal weight limits for Multi-Axle Trucks are damaging roads at an exponential rate.

And Governors of certain states allow that to happen because they get kick backs / bribes from those shipping companies which passes the damage onto the citizenry for a little bit cheaper shipping cost.

It's complete and utter corruption / cronyism at it's finest!

We the tax payer pay the burden for a minor decrease in product shipping costs while paying more for road repairs.

Then they complain about the road damage and how we have no money for it.

https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2017/06/22/murphys-law-how-trucks-destroy-our-roads/
https://www.justia.com/injury/motor-vehicle-accidents/truck-accidents/overweight-overloaded-improperly-loaded-trucks/
https://ops.fhwa.dot.gov/freight/sw/permit_report/index.htm

The solution is to ENFORCE the Federal limit.
Swap all "Dual Tires" to single Fat Double Wide Tires that increases Contact Patch surface area and reduces rolling mass of the wheels / tires.
Maybe certify add-on treads like the ones from Right Track Systems
https://www.youtube.com/user/righttracksystems/videos

That are add-on units that allows Trucks to cross over virtually any terrain, even on the Highway, and acts as a extra layer for Tire Protection for Trucks at the expense of road noise.

But it would spread out the weight to much larger surface area dramatically and lower Road Damage significantly.

one of the first papers I wrote in grad school was about the relative costs of private trash collection vs public

I couldn't find any evidence there was a difference in overall costs, either on the production side or the costs that get passed on to consumers

but one big difference between services that were contracted out vs services that were done in-house is that private contractors were much MUCH more likely to invest in capital than in labor. and the opposite was true for public.

on those terms, even though the costs are nominally the same, I would prefer private collection since a capital investment is more likely to result in better services than hiring more people IMO

edit - lol wrong topic, I'm gonna leave it though

The residents should get to choose against a list of vendors with different benefits / price tiers.
