This is a Bloodborne board, baby!

I've played Demon's and Dark Souls, and while both are good, Bloodborne took it to another level. The combat system is just so tight, the areas are well designed (and much more varied after the DLC was released), and the bosses might be the best in gaming history. One of the early criticisms was against the streamlining of RPG elements (it's harder to be a mage or long-range character in this game), but that's never concerned me because the melee weapons are all so unique that individual weapon-based runs are viable.

caveat: i didn't play any of the DLC for any of these titles

all of the games are great in different ways

i actually think dark souls 2 had the best pvp and overall gameplay, even if the setting/story was a big fat disappointment

the first dark souls is super cool for being the one to really get the ball rolling and create that sense of setting

dark souls 3 did wonderful great job of ending the trilogy and is, in terms of tech and co-op, the best made

bloodborne is beautiful and changed up the gameplay enough to almost be my favorite- it was just short and not that diverse

You did indeed stab me in the back. However, you are only level one, whilst I am level 50. That means I should remain uninjured.

What game spurred this?

Nioh. Its imbalanced trash from start to finish. By FAR the worst Souls-style game Ive ever played.

this is actually not too far from my own rankings and I can confirm from personal experience that it is very unpopular. only thing I'd swap is moving dark souls 1 below demon's souls. DeS has instant and convenient teleportation which I value VERY highly. dark souls 1 forces you to walk everywhere (until you get the lordvessel, which is limited and clunky in use). since it's the only game in the series that does this it definitely left a strong negative impression on me.

Actually I might put 2 ahead of 3. It's really weird, because I ended up liking every game way more on additional playthroughs aside from 3, which started off as one of my favorite games ever, but just gets worse the more I play and think about it. Don't really know why.

Bloodborne > Dark Souls > Dark Souls 3 > Dark Souls 2

I feel like DS3 is probably a better game than the first Dark Souls, but it was my first entry into the series and it left such a huge impression on me.

Dark Souls 2 is the only one of the bunch I never beat at least twice, and I never even beat it once. Something just felt wrong and I can't quite put my finger on it.

I actually have played Demon's Souls, but the semi-permanent health loss for each death was a very early deal-breaker for me.

this is one of the most interesting remarks that I see come up very often about the series, when people complain about one specific game penalizing their health for death. as far as the Souls games go (not counting Bloodborne), every single one of them penalizes your health for death except for dark souls 1.

- demon's souls has your health reduced while a phantom

- dark souls 1 has no penalty

- dark souls 2 has your health reduced slightly each time you die, then you can recover it all at once. ironically this is the one I see people complain about the MOST without even realizing that the others also penalize you for death and do it even more harshly.

- dark souls 3 has your health reduced when you're not embered.

yet for some reason with 3/4 of the games having a penalty I swear you always see people in souls threads talking about how "I didn't like how (insert game here) penalized your health total for dying." almost all of them do that. only one of them doesn't!

It's interesting though because it's the same mechanically, but since ds3 presents it as a bonus when embered instead of a punishment when not, it changes how people view it and feel about it.

definitely the case, and I'm sure this was done intentionally. but really at the end of the day:

your max HP is (x)
when you die, your max HP become (1/y) * (x)
your max HP goes back to (x) when you use a certain item

this describes all three games
