Canada's Senate has just passed the Liberal's bill to LEGALIZE recreational marijuana on a national level as it was voted in the Senate of a vote by 52 to 29 on Tuesday to end the 90 YEAR PROHIBITION but Canadians will still have to wait at least a few months to legally buy marijuana as it will be up to the provinces to decide on how to distribute and sell it.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said they hoped to make it legal by July 1st after making it his promise during the campaign to legalize it. His predecessor, Conservative leader Stephen Harper was asked if he would legalize it but he said his party would never vote to legalize the drug.

Canada is now the SECOND country to have a nationwide, legal marijuana market after Uruguay

Each province is already coming up with rules on the sales.

29 CONSERVATIVE Senators however attempted to block the bill and getting the independents to vote with them but it failed.

Independent Tony Dean sponsored the bill who said it was a historic bill to end the 90 year prohibition of cannabis and said it was 90 years of needless criminalization and 90 years of just say no approach to drugs that ahsn't worked.

Canada is the largest developed country to end a nationwide prohibition marijuana use as its neighbors in the US, 9 states and the District of Columbia have legalized it but it's still illegal federally.

Trudeau followed the advice of former Liberal Health Minister, Anne McLellan and Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair on the legalization as adults are allowed to carry up to 30 grams of weed and grow up to 4 plants and it is not sold in he same location as alcohol or tobacco

The most controversial measure however is the move to legalize it for a minimum age of 18 or 19 depending on the province as the ages are LOWER in the US.

Conservatives remain largely against it as Senaator Leo Housakos said "We're going to have all those involved in the illegal marijuana peddling right now to becoming large corporations. When you normalize the use of marijuana and you're a young person and you had certain reservations because of the simple fact that it was illegal, there's i believe a propensity to have somebody to be more inclined to use it. The statistics don't lie that marijuana is dangerous to our health and now we will have nothing but even lazier canadians not contributing to society"

Ironically, 2 CONSERVATIVES abstained from the vote because of the potential WINDFALL they will receive from it becoming legal...

The Canadian Senate is made up of 46 Independents, 32 Conservatives, 11 Liberals and 7 Unaffiliated.

Would you ever vote for a "Liberal" Politician if it meant legalizing marijuana?

I don't smoke weed anymore so I'd never vote for someone regardless of party affiliation just for their stance on marijuana. That being said, I think Trudeau actually got this one right and I hope that the U.S. follows suit.

The way the Liberals have handled it is a shit show. I'm not opposed to it being legalized, but they run a government about as efficiently as a drunk sea lion, probably less so.

For the purpose of legalization? Considering it's an issue I don't give a shit about, no. For other reasons relevant to things I care about? Of course. However, keep in mind that "Conservatives" can also be pro-legalization.

Which makes the thing sound more fucked up.

I don't think it should be legal, but it should be decriminalised, which I thought it already was in BC. There's a big difference between the two.

I know. I said I didn't like him or his legal policies/the justice system (in a less polite but non-ToS-violating way) and got a gang of mods calling me a bigot. No fucking joke. I fought it all the way to the top and they kept changing their argument... It was the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen on GameFAQs in the 18 years I've held accounts here for.

Good maybe it'll be impossible for US to ignore it with it being completely legal all along its entire northern border.

This isn't remotely true.

Provinces get to decide where it is sold. I know for a fact that here in Alberta it will be sold in any store that gets a permit, which will almost exclusively be tobacco shops and convenience stores. The feds mainly got involved in legalization because of interprovincial border issues that would arise from province by province legalization.
