It has happened in the comics before, not sure about fighting thanos, but it has happened.
In the Avengers Cartoon from like 10 years ago he did it to fight Loki.

Here's some real spoilers/speculation, based on cast sightings and pictures taken during filming:

Tony Stark is going to build a time machine, and they're going to wind up in the past - there are apparently scenes replicating the Battle of New York from the first Avengers movie, only with certain characters looking like their current day selves.

My suspicion is that Thor takes Tony to Nidavellir, where, along with Wong and his knowledge of the Time Stone, they find a way to build a time machine. Eventually they set things in motion to stop Thanos and undo what he did. This also explains why Doctor Strange was willing to sacrifice the Time Stone to protect Tony - because Tony needs to be alive to build the time machine in the only timeline where the Avengers win.

That would also tie into the proposed secret title of the fourth movie - Avengers Forever.

Conversely, they somehow manage to get the Gauntlet off Thanos (probably via time shenanigan means), and ultimately someone like Cap (because obviously Steve is the ready-made messiah here) puts it on and uses it to undo all of the harm he's done. But since the Gauntlet is already apparently damaged from killing off 1/2 the universe, fixing things will destroy it the rest of the way and kill the user. Steve goes out a hero and Chris Evans can retire from playing Cap the way he's wanted to for a while now. Then Tony retires and goes off with Pepper (potentially appearing for future cameo appearances or to bankrole future heroes), and we move into a new era for the films, with characters like Black Panther and Captain Marvel theoretically moving to the forefront.

It literally happened in The Infinity Gauntlet - ie, the story where Thanos used the Gauntlet to kill off half the universe in issue #1. It took until issue #6 for it to be undone (though in-universe, the entire story only takes about 24 hours from start to finish).

In that version of the story the heroes manage to get the Gauntlet off Thanos, and Nebula gets her hands on it during the fight, and "wishes" that every single thing Thanos did with the Gauntlet be undone.

They called the movie "Infinity War" (which was the name of the second mini-series), but the entire plot is taken straight out of "Infinity Gauntlet" (the first mini-series). Yes, there are tweaks to accommodate how certain characters are different in the MCU (Nebula leaping to mind immediately), but it's probably the most faithful adaptation of an existing story they've ever done so far.

All that being said, we're probably never going to see a movie named "Infinity Crusade" (the third mini-series) or Infinity Abyss, Infinity Revelation, Infinity Entity, or Infinity Quest.

Yes, he basically "sacrificed" his sobriety to Odin, who in turn let him work with the dwarves to forge weapons for the Avengers that they could use to defeat The Worthy.

Carol Danver's role is probably to rally the troops to fight back against Thanos

Kamala Khan I doubt would be in Avengers 4. it's too early. and they said they want to use her but haven't yet finalized plans for her yet. that means she won't be in any announced movies so far. she's in the distant future.

What he says is similar with the team traveling through time, but the 'spoilers' I read mentioned Tony traveling through time to gather infinity stones and building his own infinity gauntlet for Dr. hulk to wear

I know it's probably inevitable that time-travel will be involved in the next movie, based in those set pics. It's super disappointing really. Not that time-travel can't be done well, but it way too often feels like a cop-out.

I do hope that in the end they have Nebula get the Gauntlet and undo the snap like in the IG comic, though.
