The top 20% of the US makes 100k, so that seems about right.

This is straight in the 'rich' category and is actually very close to being the top 1%. Not mega rich, but yeah.

This was my answer (though I suppose some part of this depends on where you live; 100k doesn't go as far in San Francisco or other expensive cities).

I generally see $100k-$250k as upper middle class. You're wealthy and you probably have a nice house and a nice car, but you're not filthy rich.

Are we talking six figures per person or per household? Because I can tell you right now, six figures for a household does not get you anywhere near the upper class houses in Orlando and it's not like Orlando is anywhere near as expensive as the major cities

I think the lower bound of "upper class" begins at having a second home. If you can't afford a summer house you're just well-to-do middle class. If you can afford a summer home you might be rich.

Six figures is still middle class in Orange County, though I recognize things here are so expensive that we're warped compared to a majority of the country.

100k salary doesn't get you s*** in an expensive city. So it really depends on where you live.

class is a difficult topic. i feel like class isn't just income, it's also about generational wealth

someone earning 100k/year with zero assets vs. someone earning 50k/year off of the million bucks they inherited from their parents aren't exactly the same

As a part of a family that makes over $100k in the Seattle area, no, I am not upper class.

The Income Classes
The Upper Class

At the top of the income classes is the upper class. There is no single definition of whom this includes. Many think of the upper class in terms of the 1%. To be in the richest 1% nationally, a household needs to have the annual income of at least $389,436, according to the Economic Policy Institute. But one could argue that the upper class is larger than that if you look at America as a whole.

The Upper Middle Class

According to census data from 2015, 6.1% of households bring in $200,000 and higher every year and 14.1% bring in between $100,000 and $150,000. This is the upper middle class.

This all checks out.

I wouldn't even consider myself upper middle class. I would consider myself solidly middle class.

Seattle is expensive yo.
