Wonderful, now we just need to replace "cooks" and my orders will never be fucked up again! Bad times ahead for fast food workers though.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/money/nation-now/2018/06/07/mcdonalds-add-kiosks-citing-better-sales-over-face-face-orders/681196002/

Want fries with that? Don't say "yes." Just touch the screen.

McDonald's plans to add touch-screen ordering kiosks to thousands of stores nationwide to supplement in-store employees, transforming America's largest fast-food chain.

Customers often buy more when ordering on a screen than when standing in front a worker at the counter because they tend to linger longer, the company found.

What we are finding is when people dwell more, they tend to select more," McDonald's CEO Steve Easterbrook told CNBC Monday. "So there is a little bit of an average check boost that comes with it.

McDonald's will add kiosks to 1,000 stores every quarter roughly 10 stores per day over the next two years, Easterbrook told the network. And the U.S. is late to the game: Kiosks are already fully installed at stores in English-speaking markets such as the United Kingdom and Canada. France was the first country to introduce the self-serve machines.

The last McDonald's I went to had the touch screen ordering kiosks. It was super quick. The only people that were waiting in line to order at the cashier were old people who clearly don't know anything about technology. It was amusing.

The UI makes no sense for anyone that wants to make any semblance of a special order - it's oversimplified beyond comprehension.

Having worked at McDonald's in high school, the machines the cashiers use are far more intuitive and versatile, and having worked as a software developer I want to *****slap whoever designed the kiosk software.

Their kiosks are awesome. Pretty quick (at least, mine are) and effective if you can read.

That sounds too good to be true. If it works I hope they bring such a device to food places that I would actually eat from, mainly fast casual joints.

If automation replaces more stuff, it will be awesome...

I dont make special orders at McDonalds and they always get something wrong.

Jack in the Box on the other hand never gets my special orders wrong. Its a stark contrast. Bring on those kiosks already.

Now they just have to have the due diligence to fix the kiosks once they break. I've never been to a fast food place that maintained their kiosks long term.

The kiosks are great. Less risk of them screwing up your order and you can make alterations easily. Before they were introduced it was really rare that I went to McDonalds and something wouldn't be wrong with my order.

Honestly, I've never wished ill on cashiers in terms of being replaced by robots, but... well, here was my trip to McDonald's yesterday.

Him: Hey what can I get ya
Me: I'll have a McDouble plain
Him: Okay. *puts McDouble up on the screen*
Me: You got that it's plain, right?
Him: Oh yeah no worries got it
*20 seconds pass, still in line, haven't moved*
Him: What can I get ya
Me: Still me, just haven't moved yet
Him: ah right
*pull up to window*
Him: Ok so just one McDouble?
Me: Yeah... just checking, that was plain, right?
Him: Ohhhhh yeah, sorry, meant to put that in... I got it, McDouble plain
Me: Cool, thanks
Him: have a good one

guess what was in my bag when I got home

so basically what I'm saying is replace them all with robots

Engineers, doctors, lawyers, all getting replaced by robots.

I can do the equivalent work of a team of engineers from the 60s

We're all getting automated. That's why there's a larger percentage of bullshit jobs like "executive assistants," middle men managers, etc.

Efficiency is good. Eliminating jobs is good as long as we have appropriate measures to employ those let go, social safety nets, and a reasonable tax policy with an ever increasingly automonmized economy.

Nope, they'll be left in the wind.there is absolutely no desire by the public or government to give a shit about people whose jobs they're eliminating with technology. What happens to those people does not matter at all.

I am curious about UBI, as well. Does this mean that everyone would get a stipend or just people below a certain income range?

If everyone got UBI, then the guy working more than 40 hours a week could work less, but make the same income he was before. Then the guy that wasn't working would have something to survive.

Progressive tax system with a negative tax rate for the lower brackets. Doesn't seem that complicated.
That said, I don't think we're there yet for a ubi/negative rate to provide fully.
