Job Seeker: I cant read!

Me: What do you mean, you cant read?

Job Seeker: I was homeschooled, and my mama never taught me how to read!

(Thinking this is some kind of a joke, I ask my relative if this is true. She says that it is indeed true, and that he was homeschooled by barely-literate parents who just taught their children oral Bible stories as their entire homeschool education. The state standards on homeschooling allowed his mother to fudge his grades and grant him a high school diploma.)

Me: [Elderly Relative], what did you think you were doing, bringing him down here? I cant hire someone who doesnt even know how to read well enough to fill out a job application!

Elderly Relative: But you can teach him how to read! Isnt that your job as the assistant store manager?

Me: Its not my job to teach this kid how to perform basic life functions. Im busy enough trying to manage the store. My manager would fire me on the spot if I hired him!

Elderly Relative: I cant believe that you are going to let this kid go without a job! He is going to be a father, you know! He failed out of Job Corps because he couldnt read!

(I then ask if someone tried to teach him how to read while he was in Job Corps. Someone indeed did, but he didnt think he needed to know how to read to function in society! The job seeker then goes into a rant about how his daddy says that reading is stupid. He tells me that his daddy makes $11 an hour loading trucks and cant read, so he doesnt understand why he cant get a job at the store. I then take the job seeker to a section of the store that needs restocking and show him a very basic plan-o-gram. Most of the positions that we have are for replenishment associates. I ask him to tell me where a specific product should go on the store shelf based upon the plan-o-gram. Not surprisingly, he cant.)

Me: [Job Seeker], I cant hire you because you cant perform the basic functions of the job.

Elderly Relative: I dont understand why you cant get him a job here! You were homeschooled, so you should know how hard it is for homeschooled kids! You didnt graduate from college until you were 30!

Me: If you cant recall, I could read when I was four! I also went to college and earned my degree eventually. I dropped out of a program that I didnt like and did a stint as a truck driver to see the country. I received a quality education that prepared me for basic life skills and even prepared me for college.

Elderly Relative: What about the trucking company that you worked for? Could they hire [Job Seeker] as a driver? He doesnt have a drivers license, but he could get one.

Me: I dont think you understand. The testing for commercial drivers is much harder than a simple job application. If he cant read enough to fill out a job application, there is no way that he is going to be able to study the driver training manual and take the test. Im not even going to bother embarrassing myself by talking to my old boss about hiring [Job Seeker].

Elderly Relative: But it is your fault that he cant get a job! You wont hire him!

Me: Im not going to hire someone who cant perform the basic functions of the job and who would be a hindrance to my other employees. If he couldnt hack Job Corps, he isnt going to hack it working here.

Elderly Relative: Well, youre just being unChristian! Come on, [Job Seeker]. Maybe the Army will take you!

(I later heard from a friend at the recruiting office that [Job Seeker] was rejected because he could barely write his own name, let alone fill out the paperwork to take the ASVAB. He also had a criminal record that my relative had not disclosed to me. The last I heard, he was doing time in the county lockup for burglary.)

I mean, yeah - homeschooling needs to be regulated more and not just anyone is qualified to teach children to be functional adults.

Do homeschooled kids have to take standardized tests? Growing up, it felt like every other year there was some state or nationwide mandated placement test I had to take. For all the grumbling people have made against standardized testing, homeschooling feels like the perfect application of it.

I was "homeschooled". I essentially skipped grades 7-10 and jumped into public school again at grade 11.
Was on honor roll and principals list for 3 semesters then went on to university.
Did university for 2 years before I had to stop due to stress and anxiety.

I don't see braille very often outside of signs in buildings.

Though I did meet a blind programmer at an internship. He would use text to speech to code.

yea like Burgess said, braile. but there would be exceptions for certain situations. like mental disorders. but it should be illegal to not try to teach a capable child to read. you have to be able to read to function in modern society

I was homeschooled for every grade up until Junior and Senior years. I knew I was fucked up socially and wanted to get out and try correct that.

Homeschooling was fine though, as long as the parent is responsible about it... And Im sure many are not

Homeschooling isn't innately bad. It's an excellent supplementary education device, and can help some kids out. Full time homeschooling depends on the teacher of course but isn't innately bad.

I'm not sure - but I can research a little later.

Most importantly, you need to make sure that you are familiar with the homeschool laws governing your state. My go-to site for understanding homeschool law is HSLDA. I also like to reference my statewide homeschool support website, GHEA. If youre not sure where to find your states homeschool support group, HSLDA maintains a listing of homeschool support groups by state.

In speaking with homeschooling parents from other states and reading up on homeschooling laws on HSLDA, I feel confident in saying that, as of the time of this writing, most states do not maintain guidelines for graduating a homeschooled student. Some possible exceptions to that are Pennsylvania, New York, and North Dakota, so be sure that you are familiar with your states laws so that you and your student dont have any unpleasant surprises.

Most states consider home schools independent entities which means that you, the homeschooling parent, determine the graduation requirements for your student and, upon completion of those requirements, you can issue your graduate a high school diploma.

Some states, such as Tennessee, offer the option to be a part of an umbrella school. Typically, a homeschool family will register with their umbrella school annually. The umbrella school maintains records and transcripts based on the information submitted by the teaching parent and, upon completion of the schools graduation requirements, the umbrella school will issue a high school diploma.

In both the case of a parent-issued diploma and an umbrella school diploma (and most other homeschool options of which Im aware), the resulting diploma is considered non-accredited. However, homeschooling is so wide-spread now that most colleges accept these diplomas as long as the other entrance requirements of the college have been met. You can typically find admissions policies related to homeschool graduates on most secondary schools websites.
