Well, I'll elaborate for you adjl. A wedding cake is not necessary for survival and to force them to go against their beliefs to appease a "protected class" and their beliefs is similar to something the nazi regime would do that you were referencing. Get a cake at a non Christian bakery. There are plenty out there and it really just seems like an intentionally dick/lawsuit seeking move on the couples part to go to a Christian bakery and demand this. Have some class ffs. If you want your beliefs/lifestyle respected then you should respect others as well as long as they aren't hurting anyone

You can discriminate against someone for being a democrat too. Why is that different?

The judgement was pretty clear. If the baker had said "I wont sell cake to gay people", they would have lost. But they basically said "We won't craft a special cake that is meant specifically for gay people". As in, a cake baker making artisanal cakes cannot be force to perform their "art" for a specific thing they don't believe in.

If they have generic wedding cakes on display (or making a catalog of wedding cakes that can be replicated) and the couple came in and bought one as is, the baker could not refuse selling it to them on the basis of being gay. But that's not what happened here.

As an easier to grasp analogy, you can't force a Muslim painter to paint a mural depicting a scene from another religion.

I strongly disagree with the beliefs of the baker in this story, but forcing somebody to craft something depicting a symbol they don't believe in would be all sorts of wrong.

Besides, if I'm a business owner, I purchase an item.... I can choose to do whatever I please with it. It's already been paid for. Government shouldn't have the ability to force a sale.

That's what's necessary if he wants to employ the logic of "I'll make them a cake, I just won't personalize it for their wedding." I agree that it's pretty dumb, and not something that should be legally enforced, but he put himself there with his own half-assed attempt to find a loophole. It's only logical.

For one, you're presuming there's an alternative, which there isn't always going to be (which is relatively minor in the case of a cake, but can be devastating in the case of necessities like food). For another, it's not about the cake so much as it's about not allowing anyone to treat other people this way.

Bear in mind that I am saying all of this as a Christian. It is very easy to be a Christian and not be a dick to gay people. Being Christian is not an excuse. Therefore, these people are just dicks, and I have no interest in tolerating that, nor should anyone else that wants a half-decent society.

Pretty much. The whole "let the free market decide" thing only works in an infinite market, or at least one that's large enough to be effectively infinite, and a great many regions do not meet those criteria. If there aren't viable alternatives, people can't spend their money elsewhere.

Imagine if, instead of a bakery, it was the only grocery store in town (not that unusual in rural areas). Can you really say it'd be okay to force a gay couple to drive for an extra half hour each way to get to the next-closest store, effectively making them pay more (time=money, gas=money) for the necessities of life?

The argument isn't that they shouldn't bake cakes for them or offer them services. They are denying one type of specific cake. It's more like if they decided that jewish wine could only be bought by jews. If it was a small town, then they wouldn't have even bothered witht he baker cause they knew his stance. Maybe if they asked them to pray on it, they would have made the cake for them. But they probably became openly hostile when told no. Most of these situations as the people being denied the aggresor's (in the context of these gay marriages being denied cake).
