Thats the narrative our media portrays nowadays, but thats not reality.

Tons and tons of normal people are against gay marriage, or find it taboo, and statistically speaking there would have to be considerably more normal (what the populace consider to be normal) people against it, than weird people.

The weird vocal minority are the ones that get the attention, so we expect that is what reality is like.

Especially with how people are shamed for their views, or have their careers/lives ruined because people find out about their views, people that are normal, and anti-gay etc. arent going to be voicing their position on it, because of how immature and sensitive others are about opinions and views that differ from theirs (and yes, its obviously like this on both side so of the aisle).

Same deal with conservatives in general. The media paints all conservative types to be alt-right, or at the very least, have used the alt-right to define what it means to be a true conservative. Even to say youre republican in todays world means to most likely have bigoted/racist/homophobic tendencies...and that couldnt be further than the truth for the conservative/republican/right leaning people I know in real life.
