https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.yahoo.com/amphtml/amendment-california-state-legislature-limit-coach-salaries-200k-152638567.html
An amendment pitched this week in the California state legislature would cap the salary at state schools for non-faculty positions at $200,000. Coaches are non-faculty positions, so that means college football and basketball coaches (among others) would be subject to the limit. Public hearings would be needed for salaries above that number.

The amendment requires a two-thirds vote in both the Assembly and the state Senate, followed by a majority vote by the public in a ballot measure in order to pass.

So not only would 66 percent of state legislators need to approve the cap, more than 50 percent of Californians would have to as well. We have our doubts it would even get to a public vote anyway. Those coaching salaries are funded largely by donations to the athletic department. Donors want to see their teams win. A salary cap against a free coaching market elsewhere would severely limit the candidates California state schools could attract. And big university donors are also probably big political donors as well. Money talks in all sorts of ways. Its sure as hell not going to let a limit get imposed.

Somebody in the California legislature either hates college athletics or is really fucking stupid...probably both.

Give that extra money to the players

Also, Cal isn't exactly a powerhouse in either major sport these days anyways. They're paying Sonny Dykes [that's his name] $2.65 million to finish 11th in the Pac-12.

Why 200k? Also is it a hard 200k cap that requires a new law to change, or a soft cap where it can be changed to match with inflaction without a new law?

Won't ever happen. Someone will pocket it because it's donation money. Doesn't matter if it's the coach or some other guy in a suit.

Also lol California legislature. Make it a slap on the wrist to knowingly infect someone with HIV and cut (donation based) salaries to the California equivalent of 40k...

Salaries can be higher but it requires a special hearing to make it so.

Maybe, but I don't understand what the problem is if they are being paid through donations. There are alumni and other sponsors who want the best coaches and are willing to pay. I am wary of the government's intentions here.

Coaches are being paid millions annually minimum in competitive places. And tell USC fans they dont have a right to be competitive. See how that goes. Something like this happening would basically take the state of California out of the college coaching carousel almost entirely. Itd become a minor league equivalent for coaches.

A couple things worth noting here:
The bill only specifies "non-faculty positions." Coaches are certainly the highest paid of these, but I don't know how many other people this bill might impact. Yahoo sports here is obviously focused mainly on the coaches; is that who lawmakers are targeting?

UCLA's football coach already makes a base salary of just $300k; the remainder of his pay is in bonuses and something called a "talent fee." So I imagine the boosters and athletic departments might find a workaround there.

Highly doubtful. When someone is bold enough to make such a stupid claim as that, they seldom have any idea what they're talking about.

Limiting administrative staff salaries at universities is probably a good thing, along with slashing administrative staff jobs as well.

The CA legislature is sticking its nose where it doesn't belong again... how surprising.

Cal has been competitive in football and is on the rise again. More importantly, ticket sales fund all the other sports at Cal, including the swim program which has produced a ridiculous number of Olympic athletes. UCLA has different strengths but the economics are similar. This would be a disaster for both schools.

Good.

Not because its a good law, but because it further shits up CA. No decent coach will ever work in CA again. CAs schools will never realistically compete against the rest of the country. And we can point to liberal policies as the cause.

Doesnt make it okay to cut their nuts and force them into obscurity. You have to be able to compete with other PAC-12 schools for coaching talent, and you have to be able to keep coaching talent.

Coaches get paid a lot of money because they bring in a lot of money. This is nothing more than sour grapes by butthurt socialist who don't think it's fair that people with valuable skills or talents become wealthy. The biggest issues with paying the players is that men's basketball and football are the only profitable programs and even then I don't think it's all schools. They use that money to fund other sports. If players ended up getting paid you'll see the death of college sports outside those two and probably some of those programs.

Part of me feels like they should get paid as most won't make the pro level and then all they have from putting their body through this is a half assed education.

I don't know what the solution is and haven't looked at it too closely but my thought is that we just shouldn't have them go to class while they're playing. Let them focus on sports and then after theyve done 3 or 4 years and attempted to make it pro the school has to accept them back at any point and allow them to actually focus on getting a degree. At least then theyll be able to have a marketable skill if they don't make it.

That is a good idea. However I think if they let them get paid on their own this would stop so much of these issues . Like if I went to college for playing the Tuba. I can join a polka band and get paid for it while I am at college. I am still getting full ride but I am also getting money for my made Tubaing. People who play sports cannot do this. And many get in trouble when they do.

I don't think they should be banned from making money on autographs or off their likeness or whatever. If they bargain away their likeness to ea maybe that's a way they can get paid without hurting the other programs.

Im just not really sure how I feel or all the issues. I know the big programs make money that fund other programs. I also recognize they bring in so much money and so few make it pro that I feel they should probably get a cut of it.

Even if they werent funding the other programs are you now gonna start paying the soccer team or swim team players that lose money or do they just disappear. Idk. Im not sure how to fix it but I feel really bad for especially the football players most of them who won't make it pro who are doing damage to their bodies and risking serious injury for what will often just amount to glory stories and nagging injuries.
