I live in MN & besides Minneapolis, Rochester & Duluth/Grand Marais, the food here is just atrocious. The local Applebees is the best place in town 90% of the time.

There are a few restaurants in the nearby towns (central Illinois, sparsely populated area) with "trendy" menus. Overpriced, bad food, and lines around the block. One in particular is a burger place, and they put things like peanut butter and jelly, edamame, kale, basically anything that hipsters eat on them. I got a burger and fries once from there, it cost $19. The fries were mush, the burger was somehow burnt and raw at the same time, and it had enough seasoning for 10 burgers. They attempted to toast the bun, so half of it was burnt, and the other half was somehow wet. I'm not a food snob by any means, but this was just the worst thing I've ever eaten.

I can't speak for the rural areas, but here in Fargo things can seem pretty dismal on the surface, but there are several really good local places (a lot of it driven by the immigrant population here.)

The grocery stores are standard (though the ethic food stores around here are nice) for the Midwest.

Shakopee/Eden Prairie/etc. are all right outside the cities, though; the restaurant scene is fine there, but Id hardly call it rural. Guess I shouldve worded the OP to say Twin Cities & its suburbs instead of just Minneapolis.

Western MN is where the food gets really bad. Theres a nice restaurant in Alexandria called La Ferme, and besides that theres pretty much no other good food options within, like, a 50-mile radius at least.

Tbf, the Twin Cities and the MoA are a huge draw, the best restaurants are going to want to be as close to them (or any major metropolitan city really) as possible.

I was an auditor for Samsung so drove all over the state. I tried to eat locally when I went super rural and cannot think of any noteworthy place either really so you're correct there.
