Just let that sink in. I am 31 so I would have to work another 34-37 years before I can retire.

Depressing.

Who cares?

Retirement isn't "finally I can do whatever I want!", it's "I'm too old to do anything useful anymore".

So many people seem to get this mixed up.

This is key.

But also that becomes a lot easier under circumstances only money can achieve. More and more I'm leaning towards just saying fuck it all. and spending a few years working stupid hours and stupid long hauls out of town for crazy money.

3 years of no life for an actual shot at freedom and travel and toys? I wish I could fully trust myself to handle it tbh.

Otherwise it's another 40 years of busting my ass to basically just get by day to day at a sort of okay life and... I dunno. Hoping to die?

I dont mean to be negative though. It just is what it is.

That's the reality for most of us.

But there are other options. But it always involves incredible sacrifice and effort and a little luck or a fuck ton of luck that the incredible.majority never know.

Only if you don't retire early. Hell, even if you retire at the regular age, there is plenty to do at that advanced age. Worst case, I'd just play a shit-ton of video games all day and program hobby projects.

Is this the same philosophy followed by people who've saved nothing for retirement and then complain that they have to work some job until they die?

no, by all means save for retirement, but don't think you have to wait until you're in your 60's to finally start enjoying life

Except by "living in the moment" usually people mean blowing all their money on expensive trips, lavish parties, and consumer crap.

because there's absolutely no gradients between "work your ass off so you can retire at 40" and "spend all your money and work to survive well into your 70's-80's"

I fully expect to die at work. Even though I'm on track to have a good amount of money for retirement. It'll probably all be gone for some reason yet unseen. I just expect the future to fuck me in the ass somehow.

It'll be oh, old man Matt is dead in the other room. Someone will call the cops to have the body picked up and then work will continue within minutes.

I will be eligible for regular monthly retirement payments by the time I'm 38. Won't be enough to survive off of in the US but it's a nice bonus and if I did decide to move to a country with a weaker economy it would definitely be sufficient.
