The voice acting sounds pretty bad, and the cutscenes look like theyre be largely boring except for a few cool things (like this scene I saw of Mythra slapping the main dude into the screen, which shattered it and transitioned into a fight)

But I hear Shulk is gonna be added, and I need to represent my #2 in Smash Bros.

Should I just wait for the eventual Definitive Edition released in a few years?

Get Nier Automata instead.
You don't need to have played Drakengard or Nier to play it.

I just wanna play a decent JRPG though. Preferably one better than fucking Star Ocean the Last Hope, which I dropped 4 fucking times before the halfway point

get it, its a great game all the way through. I didn't play much if any of the post-game, but it's great

and the voice acting shouldn't be a worry. just switch it to japanese voices which you can't understand so you won't be able to tell if it's good or bad

I still think you'll like Nier Automata tho.
It has many JRPG elements too.

The only voice actor I really didn't like was Pyra / Myrhtra. Everyone else sounded totally fine, which I like because that's what made XBC1 unique.

It's a very solid, enjoyable game. I think I'd put XBC1 ahead of it, but I'd put XBC1 ahead of most games, so that isn't really a mark against it, and it actually fixes a lot of the major problems 1 had (quests are significantly more fleshed out in exchange for having much fewer of them, and the collectibles system has been revamped to make farming much, much easier). It does get a little obnoxiously heavy with the anime tropes, and the voice acting can take some getting used to, but that's about all I can seriously criticize. I'd recommend it.

My Switch says 200+, and I haven't touched NG+ or bought the DLC. It's not a small game.

Think of getting the Rare Blades as gambling. You get a lot of shit before getting anything good (and spending hundreds, of not thousands, of Core Crystals to get maybe half of the full roster, and several of them are hidden away in New Game+).

Other than that, it plays something like Nintendo's version of Final Fantasy (the modern ones that is).

Also, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 will NEVER get a Definitive Edition anytime soon (or at all).

Xenoblade Chronicles 1 was ported to the New 3DS (which is the version I own), and X remains a Wii U exclusive for the time being (but likely to be ported to the Switch within the next 2 years or so, if it isn't announced at the E3 Nintendo Direct).

Neither of those had significant amounts of DLC, though (X had some, but it was like a small handful of missions to grind and not anything major), so they aren't really comparable. A version of 2 that comes bundled with the expansion pass is not a particularly far-fetched idea.

That said, given that the expansion pass content is still being trickled out (the last wave of stuff is scheduled to come out this fall), even if that does happen, it won't be any time soon.

It's not that bad. A lot you can get from missions. And I got a lot from using less than 100. But maybe I was just lucky. I do hear it gets hard when you're trying to get the last one. But, eh...

I liked it a lot, gameplay was generally way more fun than the first though there were some things the first got right that they fucked up on here which was weird

It gets really, really easy to farm Legendary Crystals later in the game, which will hammer out the last few rares pretty quickly. Just don't expect to get to many past your first few from common crystals (the odds of getting one decrease with each successive one you find).

I'd give the game a seven.

Like others have said the voice acting is bad and the story is mediocre with few likable characters, if you're into shonen stuff you'd probably really enjoy the game though.

The Trails in the Sky Trilogy is fantastic (well more the 2nd and 3rd games). But only if you REALLY like reading and are into lots of world building and character development (2nd game alone has a script over 300K words).

The overall story continues into an unlocalized pair of games, and the Trails of Cold Steel quadrilogy. Though in the case of CS, the new cast and writing quality have taken a dip from the first 5 games. Apparently, as of game 9, we are 60% done with the story.
