Cap is everyone's older brother. There was a great comic (I think on Dorkly) that showed how Steve is just looking out for everyone.

Yep. Cap is so cool. One of his actual character traits is generally making the right judgment call on things.

I wasn't a huge fan of GotG 2 but Thor Ragnarok, Black Panther (should you choose to rewatch that), , and Infinity War is the strongest three film stretch in the MCU. You're in for a great ride Shred.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

As promised, SCORCHING HOT TAKE: When it comes right down to raw entertainment value, this just might be my favorite film so far, or damn close to it.

So many things about this movie worked so, so well that I really need to start nitpicking to get at the negatives, but I suppose I'll just get that out of the way -- the Sovereign group or whatever, the gold people, were pretty whatever. I felt the film tried to have its cake and eat it too with them, trying to make them both funny and threatening, and as a result, they were neither. There were also a couple moments of an increasingly common Marvel offense where they undercut a moment for a laugh line; this can work when used sparingly, but it is starting to become predictable. When the guy asked what Nebula was planning on doing next and she started talking about how she was going to kill Thanos, I 100% knew without a doubt that it was going to cut away to the guy standing there awkwardly and he was going to say something along the lines of "uhh... okay, not what I meant!!!" and it generated a big eyeroll from me. Nebula had a little bit of this in general, where a lot of how scary she was in the first GotG was occasionally undermined by a gag here.

That stuff being said, shit, I loved this. Ego was one of the more interesting MCU villains so far, as his plan was villainous by earthly standards but frankly almost understandable by, well, living planet standards. A lion doesn't concern itself with the opinions of sheep, as they say, so there was more going on there than evil-for-the-sake-of-evil. He was also just so thoroughly creepy in all of his different manifestations, and I got a huge kick out of the Hasselhoff cameo. I also thought that every Guardian (and their respective actors) really kicked it up a notch from the first movie, as this felt a lot more cohesive to me than the first GotG film. Gamora had a tangible emotional depth and was less Black Widow 2.0... Rocket was kind of annoying me for the first part of the movie but really shone in the second half as he started sharing screentime with Yondu and developing (great parallel between them). A strong candidate for Most Improved Player, though, has gotta be Drax. I liked him in the first, but he was pretty much consistently hilarious in this one, and I really fell for the "it's beautiful... and so are you... on the inside" gag hook, line, and sinker at the end because I felt he and Mantis (also a welcome new addition) would end up together. As for Baby Groot, he almost deserved his own paragraph for how unbelievably hilarious and downright adorable he was. Call it low-hanging fruit, but my wife and I both totally got suckered in by those wide brown eyes, felt heartbroken when he was getting bullied by Ravagers or when he started crying near the end, and laughed probably as hard as we've laughed throughout any of these movies at the scenes where he was trying to figure out the bomb. Color me initially skeptical about Teenage Groot for the next film, but then, I had Baby Groot doubts too.

Now a character that really does deserve his own paragraph? Yondu. What a fantastic performance from Rooker, and his death scene was hands down the saddest, most moving thing I've seen in the MCU thus far. "He may have been your father, boy, but he wasn't your daddy" is an instant classic line, and while I felt he would try to sacrifice himself for Quill, I was so sure someone would save the day. My heart sank as we watched him die. Him reaching for Peter's face... ugh. Both Rooker and Pratt demolished that scene, and the Ravagers showing up for his funeral as a Dragonheart moment just put icing on the cake.

I have a hard time finding things I didn't like about this. Much like the first, it was one of the funniest MCU movies and yet maybe THE most touching. I completely loved it and can't wait to see them in Infinity War.

Good take Biscuit, I pretty much agree. There were a handful of jokes in 2 that didn't land, something that didn't really happen in the first movie; but I think people focus a little too hard on them. GotG was the epitome of a sleeper hit, so going from no expectations in the first movie to high-to-impossible expectations in the sequel is always an uphill battle.

I think something that compounds this from some people is Drax; many seemed upset about him laughing too much in 2, and felt that it was too out of character. I disagree about it being ooc, as he showed that nutty berserker side at least a couple times in the first movie. The difference was that he was still consumed by vengeance towards Ronan, and that fueled most of his actions and behavior. So to me it was a kind of refreshing to see this character after his 'main quest' was concluded, just being along for the ride and enjoying whatever else life had to offer him. The memories of his wife and daughter aren't cast aside by any means - as evidenced by his rather touching reminiscing of them with Mantis - but they aren't weighing him down like they were in the first movie. To be honest, it kind of felt tacked on in Infinity War (incredibly mild IW spoilers) when the blame over his family's death gets shifted to Thanos and motivates his actions in key scenes. He does of course shift the blame to Thanos in GotG 1's conclusion, but that always felt more like a half-comedic throwaway line than genuine motivation.

Ego is great. I love how Quill instantly shoots the fuck out of him after his brain registers the tumor comment.

I didn't think Drax was out of character, but I did feel they were forcing him a little bit too hard. Infinity War uses his humor perfectly though, so look forward to that.

If you need another complaint, the cgi got a little weak at times. The visuals were really good, so the budget couldn't keep up for the whole movie. Notably, skeleton Ego looks kind Jason and the Argonauts-like.

Whenever I talk to someone who is upset or surprised at Quill's actions in Infinity War, specifically the captured Thanos scene, I always reference back to him shooting Ego in Guardians 2. Marvel's been building up to that Infinity War moment with examples of Quill's passion and volatility. It's his strength and weakness.

Loved reading through all of this over the last 45 minutes or so, thanks for all of it TC. It's enjoyable to see others reactions to something I'm such a big fan of. Your rankings, I am really, really close with you except GotG is probably my number 1 and thought it did something exceptionally special that no one expected. I also rate Civil War in my top 5. I'm on board with liking AoU and Thor 2 over the first one.

Thanks for the effort and taking the time, looking forward to your final films and reactions.

Spider-Man: Homecoming

Sorry I kept you all waiting for the review, I was... looking... at... porn...? :/

Seriously, great movie. I thought the merge of a standard coming-of-age/awkward-teen movie with a superhero film was a really neat (if risky) idea, but it was sold entirely by how hard the movie leaned into it and a great performance from Holland. The few parts I could've passed on (a few high school movie cliches that just never quite ring totally true to me come to mind) were far outnumbered by great moments and hilarious scenes.

Thinking about what primarily worked most, I love the faux father/son relationship between Tony and Peter, and I'm sad that meme culture!!! preemptively spoiled me on "Mr. Stark, I don't feel so good" because that's gonna rip my heart in half. It's not only great for Peter, but it also serves to take Tony's character in some fun new fatherly directions. One of my favorite scenes in the film was after the reveal that Peter screwed up the FBI bust of Vulture, when Tony said, paraphrashing, "if all those people had died, that's on you, and if YOU die... I feel like that's on me." Phenomenally written and performed by both actors and the strongest parts of the movie were when they were on screen together, for my money. It was also great to see Pepper again! Not like she's my all-time favorite MCU character, but I was wondering if she might have gotten the Natalie Portman treatment. Good laugh at the end with the reveal that it was most certainly not a test and Peter had just walked away from a massive news conference announcing his status as an Avenger, packaged with the implication that Tony was about to propose. Sidenote, but good to see Happy again too.

Vulture as a villain was a nice change of pace; not hell-bent on conquering anything, no world domination in mind, just kind of a comic-book Walter White, engaging in extremely criminal activity in the name of "helping his family" while certainly getting a massive power trip out of it as well. I thought it was a really nice touch to see him pass on the opportunity to send hitmen after Peter in the credits. I wasn't totally convinced that he was a compelling villain at first, although cool and fun to watch, but holy SHIT did the movie hit another gear after it was revealed he was Liz's dad. That scene at her house and then in the car was so incredibly tense, and the movie majorly shifted from good to great there to the end, with big credit to his performance.

The movie was pretty hilarious as well, with great bits like the aforementioned porn line (probably makes top 5 bellylaughs in the MCU), "instant kill mode activated," the guy-in-the-chair jokes... honestly, most of Ned's material was great. He was a top-tier MCU sidekick for sure, hope we see more of him, probably not in Infinity War I'm guessing but hopefully in the inevitable Spider-Man 2. Also, I'd be remiss if I skipped the Captain America content. That shit was 100% gold, including post-credits. "Pretty sure that dude's a war criminal now, but... whatever" was hysterical.

The few things that didn't totally work for me were some of the aforementioned high school cliches (or in other cases, confused mishmashes of cliches like the douchebag DJ who is somehow immensely popular and a trivia geek), some of Aunt May's content (we get it, she's "hot" (?)), and mostly Zendaya's dreadful performance. I didn't realize she was meant to be MJ until the little tease at the end, and... listen, I'm not a purist that's gonna complain that MJ isn't a pale redhead, but I do need her to be remotely likable. She was unfunny and a really bad tough-girl trope. If that's gonna be revisited, she needs a lot more development.

Overall a great addition to the MCU and a higher-end movie, though they're getting harder to rank. Only ONE MORE (unless I watch BP again)... so close!
