Normal first... And normally... Though, with certain games, I can and will change. Like I always play Danganronpa on Mean(Hard). And when I replay certain games, I choose a he's mode... Like Horizon Zero Dawn...

Normal first. Then depending on the game, if it's worth a replay, I go for the challenge. I hardly ever play a game on easy, except if there's an achievement or trophy that can be gotten more easily on easy and I can save time that way, but it's rare.

Hard, if I'm not being challenged I'm probably not having fun.

Normal, unless it's really easy or I just want to go for trophies right off the bat. Usually I up the difficulty for replays, though.

Mostly normal. Only 1 game I went for hardest.

I mean normal is.. well... normal thus the game was designed to be played on that. Other difficulties are all for less or more of a challenge. Doesn't matter how easy or hard normal is.

Normal mostly, but for old-school games that tended to be more generally challenging I might sometimes start out on Easy to ease myself in and learn the ropes.

But for some games, difficulty levels can be misleading. For example, in Digimon World: Next Order, the difficulty is like...

Normal: Very Grindy
Hard: Extra Super Grindy

Always easiest, I've played hard games since the 80s, didn't like it then so when better options came along I stuck with them ever since.

I used to play on whatever the hardest difficulty was because of games on SNES where if you didn't you couldn't get the "true ending" or some kind of bs like that.

Nowadays though, I tend to play mostly "normal" to "hard" depending on the game and my mood at the time. I'm still too much of a sucker to play anything labeled "easy" but that's more of a personal issue than a statement.

Normal, except in cases where the game is absurdly easy and your character is strong in a fun way.

Like others here, I start my games in normal, then adjust the difficulty up (ex. DOOM, Skyrim) or down (ex. Witcher 3) as needed.

If it's an action game or shooter, I usually start with Hard. If it turns out to be too difficult, I'll sometimes turn it down to Normal.

I always start with normal and see how the game plays and what the difficulty is like with it. Then tweak to my expectations.

Some games are never difficult enough for me (such as any of the modern fallout games)

Whatever is the default, usually.

In my childhood (by default): Easy
In my adulthood (by default): Normal
Classic Mortal Kombat games: Very Easy

FPS games: Normal first, then the hardest
Guitar Hero/Rock Band and related games: Expert (it's weird playing difficulty levels under the max difficulty for these types of games, but when I first played Guitar Hero, I did start at Easy and worked up to Medium then went straight for Expert when GH3 came out)

I remember when Mario DDR came out, I beat all the levels on every difficulty except the very last level on the hardest difficulty, because that was insane. And I used the dance pad... But I was younger. Maybe I could do it now... but I think not...

I can usually play most DDR songs on Difficult (one step below Expert). I can play a couple songs on Expert, but I feel with most songs it seems less like "dancing" the faster it gets.

Easy unless trophies require otherwise or its KH 2. You get some bonus abilities at the start for doing Critical and its still easy so eh.

Normal. Unless the game contains the word "Contra" in which case I play it on easy and still lose.

I used to play on easy all the time until I played Mega Man X 8 and found out by pure luck that you couldn't get the true ending unless you played on Normal. From there on, I always picked normal in order to avoid this kind of situation again, and on very rare cases, I do adventure myself on hard.

Normal for... well normal games, easy if I'm replaying it or just want the story, and hard if I'm replaying it or it's an RTS.

Well, that's impressive. I can't keep up with the CPU's speed when playing those on hard and always lose miserably.

someone else mentioned guitar hero: Expert

Easy on the first playthrough for any type of Action game, which is what I play the most, unless it makes enemies as fragile as glass and/or completely inept, like in Dynasty Warriors.

For me, playing on a lower difficulty just makes everything take less time to complete and also allows more freedom for how I play (i.e. if I feel like tanking enemy attacks then I can, but I can still dodge/block if I want to).

Usually normal. Though if it's an open world RPG like Oblivion or Skyrim I have turned it down to easy if I want to get through the combat faster.

For the latest mainline Fire Emblem, I went with hard right away because the Normal setting was actually piss easy so I went with the middle road to get a decent challenge.
