In shows, movies and cartoons you always see them use Kryptonite, magic weapons etc, but how would that work out in real life?

Is there anything the government would realistically be able to do to keep a person like that in check?

Our course of action depends on the being's actions. What are they doing? I mean, we don't have any other super powered beings, so there's no one for them to really fight.

I'd say flying around, occasionally interfering in what us humans do, be it big or small, ranging from stopping a robbery to ordering a cease fire in the middle east.

There's literally nothing we could do.

There's zero chance of an IRL Superman-like person allowing anything like Kryptonite to exist or remain on Earth. That would probably be their first act after realizing their powers and it would all be gone long before the public knew of his existence. And magic doesn't exist, so that's a non-factor.

He would pretty much instantly become the de facto ruler of the planet.

They would be our new god. There is literally nothing we could do to actually hurt him. Maybe we could guilt him or shame him into not completely warping life as we know it, but he could do whatever he wanted at anytime. Assuming even nukes could hurt him, all he'd have to do is get an apartment in Manhattan and he'd become invincible.

There are lots of things on Earth that are not extraterrestrial and are not human. I think it would be pretty clear that someone or something that is impervious to literally all forms of damage, is strong enough to lift a building, can move at or near the speed of light, can fly into the middle of the sun and get stronger, and can shoot beams of heat out of their eyes would obviously not qualify as human. -_-

Superman doesn't instantly become powerless the moment the sun is obscured. Otherwise all a villain would have to do would be walk inside a building.

If they're born on Earth, look like us, are biologically us, how are they not? And another thing, we're assuming that they were always like this, what if they weren't and they became like this? How would that person not be human?

If a person like Superman exists, humans don't have to do anything because they share something in common with Mr. Supermancopy: He still requires suspension of disbelief. Snap out of the daydream, Copyman disappears, you leave comic book land and come back to the real world. Superman exists in a universe where his human-sized lung capacity produces tornadoes and he can disguise himself by wearing glasses.

Yeah, I'd say a nuke, or rather a couple of nukes. After all, Doomsday proved that sufficient brute force can still beat Superman into unconsciousness. So most likely sufficient brute force should be able to kill Superman.

Problem is whether planet Earth itself can withstand the amount of force necessary to put down Superman or not.
