What has he even been working on that he believes is so loved by his fans?

A history book of Westeros

Volume 1 of a history book that is. One more planned but we've seen how well he sticks to plans

So sure we don't get a resolution to Brienne/Stonehearted/Jaime or Sam in the Citadel but by god Jim we get to find out where Dany's dragon eggs originated from

People still follow that? I gave up when it became politicized

huh?

having main characters who are not male and white is extremely triggering to certain kinds of conservatives who believe stories are automatically political if they have any level of diversity at all

I've always kind of kept an eye on the online ASOIAF community since I first got into the books (like around 2006) and before the show came out it was pretty popular to just hate on GRRM and make fun of him because he never released (at the time) Dance with Dragons.

Then when the show came out he got a lot of new defenders, and a lot of people were citing that one article that says "GRRM is not your bitch", etc. I think a lot of these people just got into ASOIAF with the show. I just noticed a general trend toward defending George. People that criticized him got a lot of hate and overall I just think a lot of people were enamored with the series since they just got into it.

Now that he's taking forever to come out with Winds of Winter the general community is turning against him again and I notice a lot more negativity again towards him online. I think the new fans are realizing what it is to wait for these books.

If the last books ever come out (and that's a big if) I will probably just read spoilers anyway, and not actually read them.

To really get the most out of them I will probably have to re-read the entire series (due to forgetting a lot of details), and that's not really something I'm willing to do with my interest having waned as much as it has. Plus I bet the show is going to show the ending years ahead anyway. Sure a lot of details will be different but the general end of the conflict will be the same. Just probably way dumbed down in the show.

I've been actually looking for a new fantasy series to read, I was looking into the Kingkiller saga or w/e it's called and people seem to rave about it, but apparently there's a GRRM situation going on with the author of those too.

I don't know anything about Game of Thrones (books or show), so this might be a dumb-as-shit question, but are the first five books really SO complex that he'd have no idea how to end the story now? He must have written a damn labyrinth.

He added in a shitload of bloat to his storylines after the third book that he now has to wrap up and find a way to have all these other characters introduced in that time find some sort of conclusion. Keep in mind the show has a much easier time since it has nowhere near the same amount of characters and a lot of minor characters have their personalities or direction 'absorbed' into bigger, more important characters.

I maintain that the first three books were the stories he really wanted to tell and should've ended there. Everything after is being done for the money and the passion is simply not there anymore.

It kinda sucks that I can't recommend these books to anyone anymore, knowing that the story will forever be incomplete. I sure had a lot of fun reading them though, and the show is great.

there are 20 living point of view characters with dozens if not hundreds of side characters to keep track of spread across two continents that all have to converge at some point

not to mention 20 years of prophecies, conspiracies, and foreshadowing that has to all come together coherently

I've accepted a long time ago the series will go unfinished. I'd be happy just to get one more book, but I think that may not happen either.

I've been looking forward to another First Law Trilogy by Joe Abercrombie set to come out some time next year. The first Trilogy is so good and the stand alone books set in the same world are really good too. Anyone that likes the A Song of Ice and Fire series should really check those books out.

they didn't stick to the books, so what exactly makes you think they stuck to whatever outline GRRM gave them?

GRRM did say the ending would be the same in the books. Obviously there will be a lot of difference with how it gets there and with other characters.

On another note, I remember reading since the release of the 3rd book he's been pretty notorious for writing a lot and then going back and scrapping/rewriting all of it. He talked about how he had a 5 year time jump planned in A Dance With Dragons. He had already had a lot of that written and then completely scrapped that idea. Who knows how many times he's done that with Winds. Also combined with just not writing at all and him focusing on his other projects. I can see why the years start to pile up with no release in sight.

Vin and Kelsier are both extremely well written. I don't know why you would think otherwise.

I can tell you all kinds of things things about their personality, including their body language, and I can tell you exactly how Kelsier will sit down in a chair whenever he's about to say something important. It's like I've met and known these characters.
