Because I prefer sprawling urban/suburban areas and living on the coast (though I'm currently much further from the beach than is ideal). I couldn't imagine ever living in the interior of the country for any extended period of time.

I don't get your point. TC specified states. You can live in Kansas and never really experience that first picture at all. Depends on preference.

KCMO native here, it is the tits. No reason not to live in a flyover state, assuming you're in / close to a big city (i.e. Kansas City).

That said, if you live in Kansas and not near KCMO, yeah there's nothing to do. I've done the drive from KC to fucking Denver, and trust me, there's nothing of value past Lawrence.

Ok, ignoring the fact that when people think of "flyover states," they're thinking about the unlivable rural areas:

1. No beaches close enough to drive to
2. You're subject to terrible policies enacted by the terrible politicians elected by the terrible people in the terrible rural areas that make up most of the state (which unfortunately is still the case in places like PA, but it's a problem in flyover states)

I'd agree with this. That's the only downside really besides we got the worst of both hot and cold.

Missouri is similar except there's not much to do between KC to STL. Columbia is smack dab in the middle but besides that it's 4 hours of nothing.

Its not my issue people don't know the definition of what a state is.

If TC specifically meant rural areas he'd have specified rural areas. This I why say there's a misconception. People can't comprehend you can have both huge rural areas and huge cities in the same state.

I used to live in Virginia. Going to the beach is overrated. In KC we go out on the lake and on float trips which is more fun than any beach I've been to. With the cost of living so low you can live right off the lake and it's like having a beach in your backyard.

Political side I can't argue but there's red states on the East coast too. Outside of west coast you'll encounter that anywhere.

Well most of the responses are about how there is nothing to do in the country vs the city.

And the reason they are called "flyover states" is because most of them are rural farmland, that is like what the phrase means. People from the coasts flyover them because there is nothing to stop and see.

I mean I am from Ohio. People from LA or NYC might call Ohio a flyover state but there is still a ton of things here. Granted most of it is rural farmland but we have big cities like Cleveland and Columbus where there are lots of people.

People need to know the difference between cities and rural areas. California is largely farmland and dessert, but yet what goes through most people's mind when mentioning California is either San Francisco of Los Angeles. The reason so many people live in the cities is because of job opportunities, it's more abundant in cities than in rural areas, which plays a big reason why the population and the cost of living in LA is so damn high (not to mention the weather plays a key role as well).

Yes, it is.

-Never have even the slightest worry of sharks or jellyfish.

-Beach is public so you can get arrested if you drink too much out there.

-Much easier access. Lot of people that live off the lake have a dock and boat right in their backyard. Much harder to access a boat in the water when it's a public beach.

-Water sports just as fun. I could go tubing or wakeboarding all day and never get tired of it.

Exactly what makes the beach better than a lake? The fact they're overcrowded and you can get a bunch of sand up your ass?
