Here I'll debunk reasons people think sw is fantasy

-It doesn't have magic (the force is more of a religion), gnomes, elves, orcs,
-fantasy is set in medieval times, sw is futuristic, so sci-fi.

Fantasy is definitely not just set in medieval times. There are TONS of different types of fantasy.

High Fantasy (what you're thinking of) is only one type.

I've heard the same. Despite the sci-fi elements, the story itself can be done in different settings and it'll still be the "same" story so to speak.

Depends on the IP. Warhammer 40k can be considered Warhammer Fantasy in space more or less. The Eldar/Dark Eldar are essentially Elves, Orks are still Orks, Ratlings are kinda like Gnomes...kinda.

fantasy is not necessarily supernatural. it can simply be alternate beings on other planets living their lives. it doesn't have to be orcs, elves, and dragons. it can be na'vi. avatar attempted to be a science-heavy fantasy film imo, and the ending was a character entering the fantasy realm like some narnia shit. to me it felt ultimately like a fantasy story in a sci-fi laden setting.

https://screenrant.com/avatar-day-movie/

the same way space setting is not necessarily sci-fi

that is what sci-fi has been.

Avatar is labeled and marketed as a science fiction film. i won't die on that hill. i am just saying it is more of a science fantasy using a fantasy world trope for Pandora

I've read/heard of that definition as well which does narrow down the sci-fi genre quite a bit then. Still, it is not going to ruin my day when something is labelled as sci-fi or fantasy "incorrectly".

Urban fantasy is a well known (and my current favorite) genre at this point.

Star wars is a scientifically advanced fantasy series, also known as Science Fantasy.

There are many other books in that genre, but it is not as well known.

The Shadowrun books for instance are all science fantasy.

Any book that has magical elements (the force counts) in a scientifically advanced setting (robots/space ships/light sabers/shields etc), is science fantasy.

Which is also one of my favorite genres even though it is far more rare.

I don't know why that is, as they usually rock.
