Teacher walkouts in Kentucky, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and elsewhere have dominated the news as of late.

Now a walkout is planned for Colorado.

Englewood Schools announced Thursday classes will be cancelled Monday as teachers head to the Capitol to lobby lawmakers for reform.

"We are calling Monday April 16th a day of action, Kerrie Dallman, President of the Colorado Education Association, said.

Dallman expects 400 plus teachers to be on hand Monday as they lobby lawmakers for change.

Some of the demands will be higher wages, a $150 million investment in school funding, as well as the protection of retiree benefits. The CEA does not like a proposal to raise the retirement age from 58 to 65 in order to stabilize PERA.

We have teachers working second jobs, Dollman said.

We have one teacher in Jefferson County who leaves school each day and goes and works as a dental hygienist, Dallman added.

Controversy with teacher pay in Colorado is not a new issue.

According to the National Education Association, Colorado ranks 46th in teacher pay with the average teacher making $46,000 a year. Some rural Colorado teachers make less than $30,000.

For comparison nearby Wyoming teachers make $58,000.

Englewood parents are supportive of the teachers' movement but some say the cancellation of class creates headaches.

I hope their voices are heard, Julie Hoag, an Englewood parent said.

I know there has been some frustration just from what I have heard - a lot of working parents - its hard to find child care last minute, Hoag said.

Good.

I hope what happened in West Virginia continues to spread nationwide. It's absolute abysmal pay for teachers giving what they have to put up with. And now some people want them to carry guns too? lol

Private school teachers deserve more pay, but public school teachers? LOL - no. When I went to a public high school all the teachers did was pass out packets.

*passes out packets*
*you finish packet*
*wait until everybody is finish*
*bell rings*

Not worth $20k a year, let alone $40+k they are asking.

this is the symptom, not the problem
when private sector jobs are making much more money the incentive to be a good teacher is low

also people who feel this way tend to be the ones who paid little actual attention in class so it would indeed appear to them that they were just receiving packets

tbh i was a little surprised to see this headline
i thought with all that marijuana tax money they'd have started paying teachers better

but "efficient government spending" is an oxymoron so

The teachers union promote lazy, horrible teachers. I think we should first deal with the union before we discuss a pay raise for anybody. You might accidentally give a good chunk of bad teachers a raise instead of firing them like they should be.

Well it's a good thing the problem isn't as simple as "pay teachers more" and actually delves quite a bit into the economic struggles of America and our attitude toward education
and that problems not getting solved overnight by a solution doesn't mean they're not going to be solved

I have this theory that people who don't believe Russia interfered also have no idea how badly education in America is taking a hit because of other factors.

Poor education and poor education culture led to our state now of being easily manipulated by propaganda on the web

How big of a factor do you think Russia played in the overall results? Like what % of votes you think were swayed thanks to Russian meddling?

I have a hard time picturing many people who were already inclined to vote for a particular candidate were somehow swayed the other way because of Russian propaganda. This seems especially true of Trump voters, they may use Russian misinformation as confirmation bias, but they probably wouldve voted for Trump either way, it takes a particular kind of person to vote for him. But hey, I have zero info regarding this as you do, just my opinion.

Also, the US government isnt bad at propaganda itself, they are great at shifting public opinion in a subtle way when they need it. This is especially true of war time which Chomsky talks a lot about

No like, you and me
We're on gamefaqs
We use the internet a ton
We're familiar with how a computer works and that there are fake news stories on the Internet

Average Trump voter Cletus uses his computer to watch porn and watch the Youtubes
He can send emails but can't upload an image to an image hosting site
THESE people were heavily influenced, I imagine, by the onslaught of fake news brought on by the internet

Remember, we're internet savvy compared to these people. I'm sure many of us could spot a fake headline from miles away, or at least we're weary enough to do our own research instead of believing every headline we come upon

Even on CE, headlines are generally vetted pretty thoroughly because people only read headlines here and if they don't accurately tell the story people try to shred into you. If it's not from a real new source, it's immediately called out. most americans don't do this.

So my point is, most Americans have shit-for-brains when it comes to smart media consumption in general, likely a result of our piss-poor focus on it during our formative years, and are probably very vulnerable to outside propaganda as it was directed toward us (as though it was formed on US soil)

If Russian misinformation actually worked, then technically doesnt that mean they indeed voted by relying on information granted it was fake? I just dont see most people as voting based on information or even misinformation, but rather more emotionally charged choices. Trump had em hook line and sinker with his personality, he made them feel he was one of them, I think we often underrate the power of his rhetoric compared to the effect Russian meddling had on voting results

I think the argument could be made that they likely geared their fake news stories with emotional voters in mind
remember most americans are actually moderate whether they like it or not, so the sway could go either way

I do agree, however, that we actually don't give Trump enough credit for the language he was using. I said it many times, he didn't do the politician speak, he didn't do lawyer speak, and pretty much if you criticized the way he speaks it's seen a elitism (something people were accusing hillary of, etc)

But I think the most damning thing was probably when the Russians leaked that Hillary's side of the DNC was colluded to make her the top candidate, pretty openly too

That's less fake news and more just straight Russian influence

Yea the DNC leaks probably had an affect, that was so bad for Hillary. but I kind of have a hard time being mad at Russia for that, I quite enjoy powerful organizations I know are crooked get exposed regardless of who did it. Hard truths being exposed always have negative short term ramifications, but generally I think its better the truth is out ther so we can make long term changes

i think the russians knew it would splinter the liberal base
you learn in high school gov classes that sometimes candidates do things just to draw votes away, because that's one less vote for their opponent

once that news came out, with all the people who didn't vote for hillary
i think that sort of thing made the difference

it wasn't that more people voted trump
just LESS people voted hillary

Would you rather not have Russia leaked the DNC files? Say this indeed flipped the election in favor of Trump, would you rather this info was never leaked? Or would you be ok if it was a DNC insider who used American journalists and channels instead to expose the DNC but still flipped the election for Trump?

As an example, I will use myself.

I am a teacher in Ohio.
My district is about in the middle of the state when it comes to teacher salaries.
I make $44,000 this year.
I am in my 5th year teaching.
I also have a Masters, plus 12 additional years of graduate level credit hours.

Most district have pay set on a salary schedule where your pay increases based on years of experience and education.
I make more than a new teacher because I am in my 5th year, and I make more than other teachers in their 5th year of teaching because I have a graduate degree.
When I get a Master + 20 additional hours I will actually be on the highest level in my district so the only way to get a raise after that is through additional years teaching.
