According to this from the local news coverage, the kid was indeed heading in the correct general direction of his school. He probably just turned down a street, felt like he wasn't heading exactly in the right direction any more, and decided to ask some people for help. If he walked relatively straight from where he missed the bus in this photo, he would have been cutting through some woods.

Not hard to see how he thought he was lost.

Thanks for this, I admit I was part of the "he doesn't know how to get to his school?" crowd, but that picture puts everything into context. He was on the correct path and wanted to verify if he was going the right way to the school. Even then, there's absolutely no justification for this kid to be shot at. I mean if the couple gets away with such shit like this, surely the government won't have a problem of me doing this to every Jehovah Witness or Seventh Day Adventist that goes to my front door.

I'm not reading 4 pages worth of shit

But the kid not knowing how to go to school isn't that unusual. I know during my high school days the route the bus took to go to my high school involved the highway where it wouldn't take pedestrians so you couldn't use that route to walk to school. Unless you wanted to walk on the actual road alongside the cars.

why would a kid be asking for directions for the school he goes to?

Because he usually takes the bus?

And taking a bus somehow precludes paying the slightest bit of attention to one's surroundings?

I also have an easy time believing his story. My sister has a terrible sense of direction; despite having been driven some place several times, she herself had no idea how to drive herself there after getting her license & car. And even after driving herself there. I don't think she could find her way home.

There are people with a bad sense of direction. And if my sister's like this, I can easily imagine this kid having the same issue.

Lol this

What does white privilege have to do with this? Obviously the homeowners were completely in the wrong and the guy who shot at him should be convicted. But why do you assume that race had anything to do with this? They were likely just extremely paranoid and would have had the same reaction to any kid, regardless of skin color.

But as most people point out, the bus doesnt take the optimal route to the destination. It has a bunch of stops it must go through first before reaching its destination. As a person who took the bus in grade school, i would know.

Yeah that's you, but not everyone has a good sense of direction, which is why I think it's not totally unreasonable for the kid to get lost. With that said, in context to the picture he was at least going in the right direction, but got lost probably which is why he was asking for directions.

I honestly find it weirder if a child DOES know his way to school. Like...how? Did he randomly look it up? Does he walk there frequently? Like there's no actual reason for anyone who's not an adult to know how to get there from memory. I know I didn't. I mean I have a vague sense of direction and memory of the turns my bus made (well I had this) but to know exactly? Nope.

it could also depend on the bus's route.

like, if it were to go straight to the school, it'd be one thing, but busses often cut through various neighborhoods, and it would be easy to get your direction messed up if you were to go by that alone

Your question has already been addressed in this topic. Whether you like it or not, its not uncommon for people to be bad with directions. Even to places they go fairly regularly. I wouldnt doubt its even worse for kids these days, who use their phones as a crutch for practically everything. This kid didnt have his phone that day.

We do have the benefit of home security video, Collins told the court Friday. He said Zeiglers account was not borne out by the video.

The victim in this matter, a 14-year-old child, indicated what had happened to the police and his version did bear out on that video, he said.

The video was taken from Zeiglers home security system.

Zeigler attempted to give an account of the events Friday at his court appearance which was via video from the county jail.

Theres a lot more to the story than whats being told and I believe that will come out in court, he told Judge Julie Nicholson. I was in bed yesterday morning and my wife came screaming and crying. ...

It was there that Nicholson stopped Zeigler, whose attorney was not in court for the arraignment.

I knew how to get to my high school, and I moved during my Junior year. Although that was before Google maps, so I guess kids had a better sense of direction. But does this mean that the kid didn't have a computer at home to map out a route first? Or on the off chance that he didn't, couldn't he have asked a neighbor before departing, or gone into some store to ask someone for directions if he didn't think of that beforehand?

Shooting at a kid is stupid, don't get me wrong. But knocking on a random stranger's door is the last thing I would do if I'm lost considering the other alternatives.
