Yeah, nothing beats doing side quests, and then seeing your kingdom expand as a result. And then you can use that kingdom to upgrade your stuff. This feature used to be more popular in JRPGs, WHY DID IT GO AWAY.

Was really lukewarm on the first game, to the point that I thought I'd have no interest in a sequel, but the little I've seen of this one makes it look vastly better. Will probably keep my eye on this!

Most reviews saying playing time is 30-40 hours. This also makes me VERRRRY HAPPY. Since we got to the PS2 era and beyond, I think the only JRPG I was able to log more than about 50 hours into was Persona 5.

I remember this being one of my big issues with the first game - short of Oliver nobody actually felt like a character to me. >_> Like hell if I could tell you a single bit of development anybody in the party had besides him, and even he wasn't terribly interesting. The fact that the characters themselves didn't matter very much to the combat system also didn't help.

that would be nice. I liked the first game a lot for the entire duration where you're playing alone. as soon as they introduced a second party member it all went downhill from there. I couldn't even finish the game because for me it was so different. the party member AI was reallyyyyy bad, and the game didn't seem like it was properly balanced around wanting me to switch back and forth between characters in the heat of battle.

if they just focus on the one party member and balance the game around that it will be much better.

Didn't the first game have a completely different battle system? I didn't play it but I thought it was turn based but this new game plays more like Kingdom Hearts. Is that right?

the fact that I still see party members following the main character around with HP bars and they mention perfectly timed 'blocks and dodges" has me very, very wary.

will my AI companions actually block and dodge attacks?

this was a huge problem with the first game as the AI companions wouldn't really do anything of value and the entire game became about trying to keep them alive as they constantly took damage.

changing the game from one where you control the protag instead of controlling a monster he summoned doesn't really change this fundamental issue. and changing it from action based with menus to action based without menus doesn't address this issue either.

if the AI companions still suck then the game will still not be fun to play. similarly, I'm the type who'd be annoyed if the AI companions are too good. basically it's a pretty difficult balance to strike and doesn't provide much for the game. I wish they'd just do away with party members all together if they're going to have action based gameplay.
