Running red lights when no one is around - legal or not?

This is really one of those situations where we're honoring laws for the sake of honoring laws rather than looking at the net impact to society. If you're stopped at a red light and no one is around, what harm is there in running it? The only thing it's doing is wasting someone's time that they don't really have to waste.

Well, if no one is around, how would you get in trouble for it?

My main issue with this is that in certain situations, you can't see if someone is approaching the intersection at the same time as you at 55 mph, and there's a real danger of crashing in that scenario.

After a certain time, it should be a flashing red.

No, but I do think they should just change to flashing red instead of solid red during slow times of the day.

This. Doing so when you're in a towne center at 2:30 and just got out of Denny's celebrating somebody's birthday? The only people on the road are delivery truck drivers and people heading home, meaning people are heading directly towards or away from the towne center. But in that case the lights are probably already set to flashing red meaning at your own peril.

Nah. There are situations where people will think they're in the clear but actually aren't. You make this legal and people will just run right through as if it were a green light, and that's dangerous.

I mean, that means someone was around then, right? So that's still illegal.

if you treat it like a stop sign, then you shouldn't get in trouble for doing things safely. Also, intersections with bad visibility can get signs saying not to go until green. (PA has these already for intersections where right on red turns are dangerous. I'm sure it could be expanded to include straight and left on red turns, too)

3:30 in the morning with not a soul in sight
We sat four deep at a traffic light
Talking about how dumb and brainwashed some of our brothers and sisters are
While we waited for a green light to tell us when to go

I once had to wait at a red light for about 5 minutes at 2AM, and not a single car went by.

So yes, in circumstances like this, I think it should be okay to run a red light.

If you're at a red light for 5 minutes and no one is around then sure, go for it. I've done it before in front of police because the damn light wouldn't change. He didn't give a shit.

In Atlanta, a lot of the roads after a certain time, I believe it was between 2am til 5am, most traffic lights were set to blink yellow disabling the standard green, yellow, red traffic light, which means you treat it as a stop sign. You still stop, and then proceed ahead as you would a normal stop sign. I think this should be the case everywhere, smaller towns, have it run from like 11pm or midnight til 5 or 6 in the morning depending on traffic patterns.

Around here a flashing red= green anyway and that's where the danger comes from
