It made sense in the 1700s. Also why do people today keep ignoring the regulated militia part of the 2nd amendment?

hahaha iirc you get some wild constitutional interpretations from right wingers on that point.

funny also how right wingers argue that guns are necessary to fight back against tyrannical governments and yet hold unwavering support for extensions of the state like the army and the police *thinking emoji*

i think their idea of 'tyranny' for the purposes of their organised militia wet dreams literally involves the government openly declaring the country a dictatorship and rolling out the army to crush people across the nation.

The Suprem Court ruled back in the 60's that it no longer applies in that context. The language was up for debate but was ultimately determined to be a seperate clause stating a regulated militia is ALSO not to be infringed upon.

For all intents and purposes that portion is irrelevant in most discussions on gun control now.

The 2nd amendment could possibly prevent atrocities seen in communist countries when the government tries to slaughter large numbers of people. Nobody knows what the world will look like in 50-100 years. Considering how leftists pretend Trump is Hitler, that should be easy to understand.

If I were a white farmer in South Africa for example, I would want to be armed.

Disregarding the Roman legions effectiveness for their time, the US has the most sophisticated and robust military fighting force that the World has ever seen. And yet a bunch of goat farmers and barely trained civilian fighters used primitive guerrila tactics and weapons to destabilize Afghanistan and surrounding areas for years.

It is not easy to fight against a civilian population, especially when their superior military opponent is unwilling to use nuclear weapons and other Doomsday type of technology to suppress its opponents. When you add in the fact that many non-combat civilians inevitably sympathize with and support the guerrila fighters, it becomes even more difficult to resolve conflicts.

the courts already decided that guns are for much more than that.

as far as a militia vs the government there are a LOT of ways to fight a superior force. history has shown us this frequently. the notion that the US military would open fire on its own citizens is highly unlikely. at this point guns are basically used as a deterrent from what the government can get away with.

It made sense in the 1700s. Also why do people today keep ignoring the regulated militia part of the 2nd amendment?

The "well regulated milita" was literally the entire American public. That's why the amendment gives "militia" and "the people" as appearing to be synonyms.

It wasn't possible to get the public to remain within the continental army. Washington would raise 'the militia' which equated to any man with a gun who felt like helping (the Pennsylvania Rifle was omnipresent btw), fight off a British attack, then most of them would go home and he would raise a militia in another colony.

The militia was simply part of life anywhere that wasn't a city. You needed to be defended against Indian attacks and, occasionally, European powers. Boys were given a post at 12-13 and everyone was taught to handle a gun accurately and responsibly.

Europeans don't understand the 2nd Amendment because the "armed public" has never been a well floating idea over there, partly because it made it an awful lot harder for them to rebel against the monarchy (think back to the Bastille in the French Revolution, people needed to actually get their hands on guns in the first place)

All of this is why the Supreme Court was correct to interpret the Amendment the way they did, and as it stands we can't just start throwing guns into garbage bins unless we got a constitution convention, which is difficult because of how that minuteman/milita culture has survived in rural communities. Obviously most of CE are city people who don't 'get' gun culture, but it's a way of life to a massive number of Americans. Your parents teach you a respect, fear, and understanding of guns. It is a self defense tool as well as a means of hunting (or if you don't care about that, they are also integral to environmental conservation by allowing local volunteers to control the populations of vermin creatures like deer). The biggest threat to those areas from guns is that they are an efficient suicide tool.

With all that in mind it seems to me that the best course of action at this moment is to figure out why people decide they want to shoot shit up and how they get such a horrible idea in the first place. What reasonable precautions can we put for safety without going too far in these "non-gun-attuned" areas. What laws can we set to stop people from willy-nilly getting semi auto, multi round weapons (eg jail time for irresponsible parents to get them to take precautions). How much can we stretch common sense control without violating constitutional rights. Then there's the issue of neglected urban areas that people cite, which clearly have underlying problems.

Also the NRA needs to be limited (by which I really mean federal lobbying in general)
