Smash Bros is not a conventional fighter, but it is still designed with the same general set-up and goal as anything else in the genre. Call it a "Party Fighter" or a "Platform Fighter" if it helps you sleep at night. Some of the best or most influential games only happened because they added to or defied genre conventions, and in turn invented new sub-genres. Like "Metroidvania" or "Roguelike". It just seems silly to be so invested in whether or not X popular game is Y genre.
