They'll be back, hopefully.

DBZ abridged is wildly popular and they've been leveraging this for years, pumping out tons of other (very mediocre to downright terrible) content in the same channel to take advantage of their subscriber count. Abridged episodes make sup less than 10% of their uploaded videos.

It started out releasing over 1 episode per month and recently they've been averaging 3-4 episodes a YEAR! For reference, Cell achieved his perfect form in abridged in december of fucking 2015, it's insane how slow paced it is. It's an abridged series with a longer run than the original.

Once they realize that losing DBZ abridged will also lose most of their relevancy, they'll come back.

The problem with DBZA is that they drastically increased the production values over time meanwhile running out of material.

It's easy to make your first few episodes. Just make it quick and dirty with lots of cheap jokes.

But by the end, they had quality video editting and voiceovers, and they tried to go way too into detail with everything.

Meanwhile, one guy is doing pretty much everything in the only MLP abridged that matters.

I don't know how many others it's influenced but I got back into DB after watching abridged. Before that I hadn't seen anything Dragon ball for years.

This is why I said "some" credit in the opening post. Although if I had known that statement would have caused such a commotion, I would have omitted it entirely.

The intent of this topic was to show appreciation for DBZ Abridged, not to start an argument about it. But it did, and for that I apologize.

I don't watch any of these abridged shows anymore but I always kinda felt DBZA was way too deferential to the content it was derived from. They pretty much religiously stuck to the structure and writing of the original series albeit with more zany references and in jokes peppered throughout. Iirc there was even running jokes cribbed from the original series too. Just made it seem a bit redundant imho.

Well, it is more to do with them moving into professional stuff that they can't be fighting Toei on "iffy stuff" and have that as an issue potential people might not want to deal with in future business.

They can't monetize dbza, that's the reason they fill up the channel with content they CAN monetize whilst simultaneously delaying episodes. They are in no rush to finish the series.

I mean.... I really enjoy DBZA, but the notion that it significantly contributed to the Dragon Ball fanbase is a pretty absurd hot take. We're talking about a series that had significant and widespread television broadcasting for years on Cartoon Network, including remasters and the Kai recut. Some variation of the show was on almost every week for well over a decade, and oftentimes multiple entries in the series.

The only abridged series that I honestly think you could make an argument on in that fashion would be YGOTAS, but even that's a bit of a stretch.

As for possibly ending, that is disappointing. They do a great job, and I'd love to see them do more. That being said, from what I understand it's pretty labor intensive with high demand and the pay isn't all that reliable especially as they can't monetize their videos if memory serves. If they're feeling burned or tapped out on the source material and want to move on, I can get that entirely. However, I'd be worried if their expectation was to keep doing what they're doing with other material, as I think that'd blowback on them. Their other videos under-perform significantly compared to DBZA, so if their hope is to remain an internet content provider I think that discontinuing their golden goose would be a mistake much in the same way that the Yogscast's popularity significantly tapered off after they got pissed at Notch and cut back on their Minecraft content (particularly ending Shadow of Israphel).

They're talented, and they produce some legitimately funny stuff and I've enjoyed some of their other non-DBZA works. That being said, that's their bread and butter and what drives people to their other content, to their con appearances, and buying merchandise. That's a loss leader if I ever heard of one.

That's actually the only reason I like it.

There are really only a handful of good abdridgers. TFS, LittleKuriboh, PurpleEyesWTF, and WeeklyTubeShow are about it that do work routinely, and maybe a couple others that can do it from time to time but not pump them out.

Obviously it's a fine line between the two (and honestly like the other guy said, most abridged are/were kinda trash) but I just felt over time that DBZA felt sort of...redundant? If they're going to go for even the same comedic beats as the original dbz did, whats the USP of DBZA even meant to be?

It's not just clips they've uploaded, there's hours upon hours of material made by animators they took and just dubbed over. That's a thing brothers did back in the day when they put the television on mute ffs. All I say is don't be blind and give them credit just because you were entertained. It's funny in bits but the fanboyism is out of control, and what team four star does is worse than alot of other YouTubers do. Imagine uploading a whole movie to YouTube with just the voices dubbed over, if the company is around still they WILL copyright claim it, and rightfully so.
