I'm curious what people who make comments like this want. Do they want death threats on the internet investigated? If someone makes a claim that a teenaged kid threatened to shoot up the school should they storm in that kids house, go through his internet history and confiscate his guns?

Like it's totally valid to compare mass shootings to natural disasters and fires, like, it seriously is, but here's the thing.

1. literally every building has smoke detectors, it's illegal to make buildings without smoke detectors, and it's illegal to disable them except for maintenance / repair.

2. Most public buildings, especially schools, have sprinkler systems in the event of fires.

3. We have billions of dollars invested in geologists and meteorologists watching and letting people know when the next earthquake / tornado / flood / etc will strike. They don't always get it right and one slips through every once in a while, but they're right more often than not. We have basically $0 invested in taking action against spree killers or terrorist attacks besides the usual emergency response.

4. In places where earthquakes are likely, building codes require the building have a certain amount of tolerance to such earthquakes.

We do a lot to protect people in advance of natural disasters before they happen. We don't do ANYTHING for mass shooters.
