the sheer amount of school and mass shooting news that come out of that country are staggering, not to mention the posts here where some people mention hearing gunshots being an everyday thing if they live in x area

i understand that it's a complex issue, but you'd think there'd at least be an attempt to change something, but instead it's one side screaming "ban guns!" and one side screaming "my rights!" and the rest offering thoughts and prayers while the government seemingly does absolutely nothing about the issues they face

i'm a complete outsider, but living in the middle of all that seems like it'd be unbelievably frustrating

Because gun violence creates fear which increases sales in guns and gun companies get more money to buy-lobby politicians who then continue with fear mongering. And whenever there's discussion of gun contol, said politicians would also misinform the gun toting population that gun control is all about taking their guns away which also leads to fear of losing their guns so they buy more guns and so on.

America has just lost it's way. Not just in gun culture.
But in its extreme corporate culture, putting profit above people.
This housing boom bubble is an example. Houses are homes, not commodities.
People are family, not just workers.
Guns are an item, not a way of life.

Our Prison system is out of control.

We stick are elderly in senior living homes, and wait for them to die.

Americans who wave the flag thinking they are the greatest are basically pigs rolling in shit.

This county has everything it needs to be amazing, and we're throwing it way, largely for the profit of a few.

I think that legalizing drugs would go a long ways in fixing a lot of this country's issues. I would like to go a little farther than that and would like to see a constitutional amendment which, at a minimum, protects the individual's right to possess or consume whatever substances they choose.

Theres really not a great solution either way. Im absolutely pro-gun, and its a constitutional right to own one. It was so important you dont even have to scroll down to see it if you look up the Bill of Rights on your phone. The Founding Fathers held this right as one of the most fundamental to the nation.

The fact that its all but carved in stone, the Second Amendment isnt going anywhere. We need to look to what other alternatives there are to help prevent instances like this. Admittedly, I really dont have a great solution. But repealing an Amendment, much less one of the original 10, is never going to happen.

Except it's not. Legal codes are based on British or French ones. Society was rooted much earlier, which many aspects of the US rooted in the various anti-monarchy revolutions around Europe in the 18th and 19th century and the nationalistic unification of countries like Germany and Italy. Liberties, for their part, are again, more rooted in the Tennis Cout Oath, the Magna Carte, and other rights movements/moments. Society did not suddenly begin to exist when the constitution was signed. It's a nice story, but it's categorically false.

Also worth noting is that historically dictators actually made use of inflexible legal codes. All legal codes either have to be flexible, or they cause countries to stagnate and die slowly due to their inability to adapt to changing technology and societal standards.

Explain how then. Almost every single mass shooter either passed a NICS, or killed someone that legally owned guns to start their crime.

People throw that stupid line, "We gotta do something," then go and pass some dumb feel-good law, or draconian ban that hurts the people that abide by it.

There's people in power every fucking day that make it their career goal to ban guns. Even managed to do it in the 90's. So top throwing that stupid line around too.

Youre right that we certainly brought over certain ideals from England. But all of those laws that we have today are encompassed within the our Constitution. Any law that Congress passes will be invalidated if it steps outside the heartland of the Constitution or is in direct contradiction of it. The Constitution, and the Supreme Courts interpretation of it, is our only protection against an overbearing government. To allow that same government to just widdle away the parts it doesnt like just makes those protections not worth the paper theyre written on.

You are speaking in really vague, flowery terms. The reality is that the legal code was not innovative, and inflexible rigid laws completely kill countries.

If the constitution was really eternal, how come we've had to create other laws to ban things like slavery or cocaine that were perfectly legal during the time the constitution was written?
