If you make 6000$/month and can't live like a king off it you're doing something horribly wrong.

Let's day your mortgage is 1800, 400 in electric, 235 for Health, 430 in Car insurance/payment, 200 in water, 200 on internet/cable or netflix, and you spend like 1300 on food. That covers all your expenses and you would still have like 1500$ to spend on whatever the fuck you wanted.

These figures are like astronomically high, too. These aren't realistic numbers. Someone who's not dumb as hell would probably be spending around 3000$ for their living expenses and then using the other 3000$ for whatever they wanted.

But, part of the culture today (and always) involves getting a luxury/sports car when you live like 7 miles away from work which adds up in fuel costs, insurance/payment, and much more costly maintenance and repair. People also tend to spend their excess money on things like designer clothes and other bullshit.

It all depends on who you are and what your situation is. If you have a family to support, then 6k a month is not that much. If you are paying off debt, same story.

It's not obviously the case that making 100k makes you rich or wealthy or well off, unless you are looking at someone who was making 100k for 5-10 years minimum while being able to stash aside 50% of their take home pay or w/e.

Utilities (Electric/water/trash/sewage) $145-180 depending on time of year as rates flux between summer/winter.
Gas $25-80 depending on time of year. Right now I'm seeing $70-80 bills for the heating.
Car gas $80-120
Phone/internet/cable $160
Netflix $11 or whatever they raised it to.

Insurance for 2 cars once a year $500
Property tax once a year $700

Cars paid for and home inherited.

And $5596 is a lot of money per month.

Is that before or after taxes?

My 80k salary a year turns into me making more like 4200 a month after taxes which really has changed how I think about stuff like this.

Just curious - were you one of the people who I used to argue with about taxes? It's always delicious to watch socialists turn into adults once they get their paycheck and see how much of it went to Uncle Sam and the state government.

I was never a socialist I just didn't make enough taxable income to really pay much in taxes.

You can certainly thrive on 100k per year, even within the first year. But you'll likely have credit card debt or student loans to pay off, and you'll have some investing you'll need to do in order to have an emergency fund and any retirement fund.

when i first graduated college my starting salary was $47k and I lived by myself. I had zero debt during that entire time until I took out a loan for a car. i was also able to save 10% of salary (pre-tax) for my 401k while maxing out my Roth IRA.

my life is a direct counter-example to your claim.

edit: disclaimer that i was fortunate enough to not have student loan debt to pay off, which definitely enabled me to do this
