How far do you drive a day to spend 400 a month on gas? I have a car and an suv and only spend 150 a month.

I drive a lot. I give lectures all over southern California so sometimes I'm in L.A., sometimes I'm in OC, sometimes I'm in San Diego. Plus gas is $3.60 a gallon right now blah

People saying 100k a year isn't rich are utterly delusional. That's more than 80 percent of people in the United States alone and probably more than 90 percent in the world. 100k a year is more than most people who have ever lived have or will ever make.

According to this logic, someone making $7 per hour is rich since most of the world makes like what, 50 cents per hour? What a stupid argument.

I mean, you can leave the comparison to within the US or even within the local area. 100k is a lot in the vast majority of places within the US. Is it though to retire in a few years or enough to save 100k a year? Or course not. But how is that your definition of " a lot". It's obviously not the definition for most in this topic

This seems too low. Natural gas for people even in warmer states like Texas can be $150/month for heating and $150-$200 on electricity for the A/C in the summer.

I live in Dallas and my electricity is usually anywhere from 60 to 120. It only gets up to 120 in the hot months. Usually it's like 70 or 80 though. And I split it with my brother.

But I'm legit wondering why his water is so damn high. Mine gets to $50 at most

I'd say they aren't completely delusional...technically, if I didn't have a wife or anything and was making the money I make NOW at my job that required a lot less, I could have kept my life similar and scrubbed it with more $ coming in

but my job requires I dress in suits which aren't cheap....dry cleaning gets expensive....since the baby is coming I had to buy a new Jeep (OK this was more of a splurge but me and my wife both work long hours so I wanted her to have something safe and nice for baby)...etc

$1,400 for rent
$60-$80 a month for food
$140-$200 on water
$60-$100 on electric + gas
$100 on phone bill
$40-$100 on car gas
$130 for cable/internet/phone
$100 for Amazon Prime
$14 for Netflix

$1400 for rent - may be reasonable depending on area
$60-$80 for food - I think realistically you'll be spending more than that, though maybe you can cut down to this if you also grow some food yourself
$140-$200 for water - where the heck do you live that water rates are that high? That's normal for about half a year here.
$60-$100 on electricity + gas - reasonable
$100 on phone bill - dude, get a prepay mobile with a good package, something like $20 a month
$40-$100 on gas - may be reasonable if you're somewhere fairly central, otherwise, a bit low
$130 for cable/internet/phone - you already covered phone; cable is not a necessity; internet can be gotten much cheaper
$100 for Amazon Prime - not a necessity
$14 for Netflix - not a necessity

Water- 1000

Insurance (bike) 1600
Fuel (total) 3600
Food- 4800
Credit card- 2000

Requisite spending: 27970

I could double my expenditures and still have nearly half my income as fully disposable at 100,000 per year.

Even with a gross income of 100g, at a 30% tax bracket, would still see me with more than 50% of my income be fully disposable.

100k - 35000 taxes = 65k

- 14400 mortgage = 50,600
- 3000 food = 47,600
- 3000 utilities = 44,600
- 2500 insurance for two cars = 42,100
- 2500 fuel = 39,600
- 5000 student loans = 34,600
- 10000 into emergency fund = 24,600
- 15000 into retirement fund = 9,600

Factor in stuff like a parking pass if you drive to the train station a lot, or a parking pass if you park in an expensive parking garage. Wear and tear on the cars. Misc. repairs around the house. Doctor visits not fully covered by health insurance. Kid costs if you have kids. Helping friends/family.

Yeah, you have a cushion and you can fund savings/retirement. But you're not rich at all. You won't really feel that well off until you've done this for at least a few years and have an emergency fund that covers a year of expenses and a nice retirement nest egg forming. Sustaining 100g can make you rich. But over time. It is not in itself rich.

Might...for second homes (which CA has a lot of) it might create more inventory

I know our legislature is looking into figuring out how to build more affordable housing for the middle class

but the way CA works is there are ultra rich folk who live in the nice houses and they subsidize the poor folk
