I finally bought the expansion for Horizon Zero Dawn. Loaded up the game to find that when I had a house sitter over the summer he played that game and apparently quick-saves overwrite your old progress.

So now instead of my 100% completed save I have his ~10 hour in save.

It's 2018 why is this a thing

Your save isn't backed up in the cloud, is it?

Checked and it's not. Apparently in both the game and the cloud you only get your 10 most recent quick saves.

Apparently in researching this it was fixed in a patch in November.

Not that that helps me any now.

Oh cool, I didn't know that Abandon Ship just launched in early access. I watched a ton of video about it last year, and it's essentially Pirate FTL. Not sure how substantial the EA is right now, but I'm pretty interested.

Colossus 9 is still annoying to fight. That's the turtle-like one where you have to get it over a geyser it just the right positions. It still feels finicky to pull off.

Whats the final verdict? Worthwhile if you have access to SoM SNES, or something to pass?

If youre a SoM nut I think it may be worth it but if you just want to play the game youre probably better served with the SNES version because there really isnt much difference aside from the visuals.

The best game of 2017 tournament has helped me work out some of my thoughts on my favourite games from last year, and here is the definitive top 10 list imo:

1. Nier: Automata
2. Prey
3. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
4. Trails in the Sky: The 3rd
5. Yakuza 0
6. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
7. Night in the Woods
8. Splatoon 2
9. Xenoblade Chronicles 2
10. Dishonored 2: Death of the Outsider

Games that almost certainly would make the top 10 more difficult than it already is if I played through them:
- Hollow Knight (Played the demo extensively)
- Divinity Original Sin 2 (Played the Early Access build enough)
- Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood

Pretty confident that last year will go down as my favourite year in gaming, possibly ever. Any year where I feel three sequels to my GOTY from previous years improved in many ways on their predecessors, and those aren't even in my top 5, is something special.

No Mario Odyssey? That was my Game of the Year last year. It was such an enjoyable experience, almost endlessly playable. Night in the Woods being top 10 makes me want to play it sooner than later. Also, that Prey ranking!

Odyssey is a good game, don't get me wrong, but that's all it is. It's pretty far down in my personal Mario rankings. And last year was an all-time year - I think I'd get 20 games deep before I stopped considering great games.

Finally got around to starting Dark Souls 3. Not sure how I feel about it so far. It feels a lot more like Dark Souls 2 than 1 or Bloodborne - exploration feels limited and the level design is a little uninspired. It's still a Souls game so I'm still enjoying it, but it's not grabbing me yet. The couple bosses I fought so far were all good though.

Part of this feeling is because I just hit the swamp area, which is a huge step down from the previous areas in overall enjoyment. This series can never get away from shitty swamp areas.

wasn't a fan of the undead settlement aka bloodborne village? that might be the single biggest area in the entire souls franchise with so many different paths and levels of elevation! love the atmosphere there too.

dark souls 3 has some of the best bosses in the series, too, especially with the two dlcs factored in.
