It's great. Overall you're getting the same core gameplay but there's a lot of quality of life improvements over 4U. Plus you're playing it on a TV with a controller which feels way better than the old handheld controls.

Only at HR4 in world but....

+Graphics vastly better obviously. Absolutely gorgeous.
+Some neat little touches in presentation
+Roster is mostly brand new monsters
+Hunting maps much larger
+Monster interactions and enforcements feel less artificial and more dynamic
+Some QoL fixes
+Seems to not really have many mandatory small monster/gathering quests
+Some tedious things like mining armor spheres are gone. You get them from bounties that can be completed during any quest (as long as the proper monster/material/etc is present in that map). Also whetstones are now a always present infinite use thing which is good.

-Far less monsters and maps
-Is clunkier in some ways
-NPC voice acting can be annoying sometimes
-Havent done much but actually going on quests(like signing up) and online seems a little more unwieldy...
-Longer load times
-Minor framerate issues
-Still has noticeable clipping issues

Some of my impressions

I know exactly what youre talking about because these are the kinds of things I find worth criticizing in a lot of modern video games.

So in your opinion, which Monster Hunter games do you feel performed the best in these areas?

Ahhh. That's not what I thought you meant by vertical. By vertical, I thought you meant linear.

As someone who felt Gen/XX were a step forward with arts and styles, and feels that the charm farming needed an overhaul, how is World? I also didn't care much for Vertical Hunter 4. World seems, from the videos, like it took the same path of 4 in terms of a different direction that doesn't feel organic.

You can forge and upgrade charms in world.

Im a few hours into Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. Do I have the basic gist of the game down?

Hunt monsters to get materials to make equipment, so I can hunt stronger monsters to get better materials to make stronger equipment so I can hunt stronger monsters?

Not saying thats a bad concept for a game. Seems like it could be pretty addicting actually.

I put hundreds of hours into MH4U, got above HR 300 and regularly farmed LV140+ guild quests. World is definitely a big improvement imo, it almost feels like you're experiencing everything again for the first time. The maps are huge and crawling with items and monsters, having one seamless map instead of smaller individual zones feels way better. Monsters themselves feel like they are truly part of the environment. All the weapons were rebalanced and given some new tools or utility, in one form or another. Farming materials to craft equipment doesn't feel like a chore anymore, espcially for rare drops like plates or rubies, but they don't feel harder to get as well, if that makes sense. Like say if you kill a monster about 3 or 4 times, that's generally enough to make all 5 armor pieces. Unlimited whetstones and pickaxes is a well appreciated QoL improvemrnt, as well as being able to move while using consumable items like potions, berries, etc.

Right now I think MH4U is better due to having a better roster & story.

MHW may be better when they start releasing more monsters and stuff but who knows how much they do.

Ah. I've never known anyone who thought vertical was synonymous with linear in gaming, but good to know for future clarification.

It's probably not a thing. But Mark Brown, the host of Game Maker's Toolkit on youtube, has a series where he does an in-depth analysis of the dungeons in all of the Zelda games. For a lot of these videos, he uses this chart system that he invented that show the layout for the progression of each dungeon. The more linear dungeons have vertical charts, and the dungeons that are more open and allow more freedom for which order the rooms can be explored in have more horizontal charts. When I saw the word "vertical" in your post, I thought maybe it was actually a commonly-used term when discussing game design.

Only 2 MHs I've played. To me it's just exactly what Id expect from a series making a leap from handhelds to consoles
