not sure about video games but text-based RPGs definitely did that for me, but I think the bigger part of it was just hanging around the community

You mean like a MUD? ohhh how I've wanted to get back into one of those. Used to play like 15 years ago

The Dark Souls games, namely Dark Souls 2

Last year, I was going through a tough time in my personal life where I was stressed/unhappy at work and in my personal relationships, and when I got home I found that I was having trouble enjoying things I once used to enjoy.

One of the big things I was no longer able to enjoy were video games, because I felt that a lot of the elements that drew me to games originally were gone. But then some people on here told me to try out the DS games and after the games "clicked" with me I fell in love.

I played DS2 nonstop for a few months, beat the game, and it really helped me to get my head back on straight. Didn't get me out of the funk but made me feel able to manage it.

Final Fantasy 7 back when in first came out. I had really bad depression back in the late 90s and got through it largely with the help of JRPGs.

Super Mario Galaxy really gave me joy while my Mum was going through dire stuff with cancer. After she died I stuck with Nintendo and cheerful games for like a month or so due to that. Funnily enough I don't remember what those ones were anymore.

Harvest Moon for Gamecube used to *cause* me depression. It's a long story, but here it goes...

I dated this girl for a few years. Fell in love with her. Her name was Bethany. She was a Mormon. Probably still is. I wasn't the best boyfriend in the world, though, even though I loved her.

Anyway, she came over one day while I was playing Harvest Moon for Gamecube. As I was playing, I happened to purchase a cow for my farm. That of course meant I had to name the cow. So I named the cow Bethany, in honor of my girlfriend. Every time I would brush Bethany in the game, a heart would appear above the cow as it moo'd in delight and made a cute face. My girlfriend would say "awwwww" and then snuggle her cute face against my chest. We were so in love.

But then one day something bad happened. She found out that I had been cheating on her. And I was...with my co-worker who had a really nice ass (doesn't anymore). My girlfriend dumped me on the spot, and I was left devastated.

With nobody to turn to, I tried to take my mind off the breakup with some video games. So I'd boot up Harvest Moon. One of my duties in the game, however, was to brush my cow every day....the cow I named Bethany. And every time I'd brush Bethany, I'd be reminded of the time my girlfriend Bethany snuggled me so tight the first time she saw me brush Bethany the cow. It just fucking hurt so bad. I'd cry and cry and cry. I eventually stopped playing Harvest Moon for Gamecube because of this.

That is sad!!!!I don't get guys or women who cheat.

One of these things is not like the other~ Ah well. We screw up when we're younger and learn, hopefully.

~

If anything, WoW enabled my depression for a year or so; too easy to slide into and do some hardcore escapism.

No game has pulled me out of depression, but the closest a game's been to pulling me through a hard time is Persona 4. Which probably has more to do with that was my game du jour while going through the rough time, but it's messages of love and friendship and truth and stuff were welcome.

All of them....sort of.

But really, I'd say Donkey Kong Country 2 and GTAV. They were there for me through some tough times back in 2013.

GTAV in particular with the story/relationship between Michael and his family(especially his son). Helped me cope a little with some IRL stuff I was going through :/

The urge is definitely a problem. Something I've struggled with my whole life.

Is it because you weren't having regular sex with your ex or did you feel you just wanted it from different women? Could u not control the urges?

Yikes. That's kind of a depressing way to look at it

C'mon bruh

There's NOTHING out there that was memorable to you long-term? Made you look at something in a way you might not have?

Darksiders 2 threw me pretty deep in when it was released. Shit was full of Death literally and a bunch of depressing visuals and gameplay. Opposite of the feels of 1.

I was going through a bad time and if I hadn't stopped playing, it would have just gotten worse. Glad I dropped that bitch.

I meant it as a good thing. Sitting at home thinking negativity would have been terrible. But games didn't like cure depression or give me a new outlook on life.

I know it sounds shallow, but Persona 3 helped me come to terms with a lot of my high school issues at the time (namely my dad's passing) since it was the only one I actually played while still in high school

I remember one time I had a dog that was dying of cancer, and I was very upset at the time. I was playing through the Halo 1 campaign at the time. and whenever I fought the Flood, it felt cathartic because those things kinda look like cancer. and I would enjoy blowing them away. I pretended like I was blasting the cancer attacking my dog.
