Either some of there was some kind of misunderstanding, or you have literally the worst doctor of all time. Being that your not literally dead or having permanent brain damage, I'm going to lean towards the former. It sounds like you might have had some kind of abscess and might have been becoming septic. If so, you'd probably need an incision and drainage (fancy name for lancing it and squeezing the pus out) along with antibiotics.

Also, as OliviaTremor said, there is absolutely a strong link between age and cancer. While it is true that one could get cancer at any age, the types of cancers that children get are different than the types of ones adults get.
