At least, if we consider the 90s to be Disney Renaissance up until 1999 with Tarzan and Fantasia 2000.

James Woods as Hades probably props up Hercules pretty high above Pocahontas, which only has the color of the winds song as any good, and maybe savages. While Hercules screws up greek mythology, that's the least of the movie's problems and not as bad as screwing up real life events likes Pocy did.

I still feel ambivalent about many elements of Hercules. Stuff like Megara's whole deal and Hercules being the only white bread goody two shoes I've never liked (when that archetype is my absolute favorite in shows and movies) and the soundtrack, which I could go either way with praising or finding annoying depending on my mood.

Pocahontas has a lot going against it. Like a lot. Stuff that was ok as a kid isn't nearly as fun, endearing or charming like the talking tree and the animals and mel gibson's John Smith. And the movie just has... no point. Like by the end it was like... what was the point of the movie? JS and the white men sail away on their ship, and Pocy watches them leave. Movie is kind of a depressing waste of time in that sense.

Those are more or less the 2 duds of that era, but even being duds in that era isn't so bad when they've got great art and soundtrack sometimes.

I understand the hate some people feel towards Pocahontas, but I've always really enjoyed that movie regardless. Probably even more than Hercules tbh.

Plus she's smokin' hot.

I enjoyed it as a kid... probably way more than I should... way more. Which is probably why I hate it now.

The real ending is even more depressing.

Pocahontas leaves on a ship to england to meet John Smith but he's not there. She gets news that there was a gunpowder explosion on John Smith's ship and he never made it back. She ends up marrying some random guy named John Rolfe. Then later John Smith shows back up and is like all "fuck I survived" all Tom Hanks castaway style and Pocahontas who is like married with kids to Rolfe at this point is like "dude what the fuck?" and that's the end.

Also if the best thing about Hercules is that it gave us the secret boss fights of the coliseum in kh 1 then... yeah. Speaks for itself. And of course James Woods Hades is the best thing to come out of that movie. As much as I liked Pocy as a kid with all those hot main characters it just doesn't have that, something good that came out of the movie.

Little Mermaid or the Rescuers are worse than Hercules or Pocahontas.

Hercules is like the best Renaissance movie anyway.

Hades was indeed a show-stealer but I also think Meg was a standout too. She had a really cool personality, kind of a less polite/moral Jasmine, and her song was awesome. All the characters are fairly memorable. Movie doesn't deserve the shit-list, IMO but I'll admit it doesn't feel quite as iconic as some of the other films.

I can't speak for Pocahontas as I haven't seen it in so long, though.

I don't have one good thing to say about Pocahontas.

First off, even if it had been good, I hate liberties being taken with historical figures. It's one thing to tell a story inspired by Pocahontas's rescue of John Smith. It's another to turn a 13 year old girl in a relationship with a fat bearded guy into a romance between a Native American Tyra Banks and an Aryan Mel Gibson.

Second, it's just a horrible film in its own right. The Disney knockoffs like Quest for Camelot and Anastasia were better movies. The villain is terrible. The leads have little personality. Nothing really happens in the film. It's just a bunch of scenery and they expect you to watch the film because she's the first Native American protagonist a Disney movie has had. (Yes, they did progress instead of a plot in the 90s too.)

Also, I hate to be this guy, but how do you tack a happy ending on a film like that when centuries of war and genocide followed? A raccoon and a dog playfully chasing one another is not an accurate metaphor for the conflicts which would ensue.

It deserves all of the hate it gets and far, far more.

Hercules made some mistakes, but it had some good moments. Megara is smokin' hot, the characters are interesting, and there were a few good fights scenes. Also, Hades was the last great Disney villain.

It's not a great Disney movie, but it's not the worst of the 90s either.
