My state could institute this and it wouldn't affect me in the least. Only time I ever even have a straw is when I get a milkshake since I rarely buy drinks and never use them at sit down restaurants

To be honest, I'm fine with this. Regulations that push us into better behavior are fine by me. I'd be fine with a bill that banned smoking entirely, for example.

As a Californian (feels weird saying that now), I'm fine with it. If you've ever done a trash pickup before it's insane how much of it consists of straws.

I've personally thrown out more than I could count unused because it was given to me when I didn't want it.

I could see why socially anxious people would be upset that they actually have to talk to another human being to get one, though.

I think a fine or jail time is outrageous, but my pub has instituted this policy and it's cut down straw use by 80%. Most people give much less of a fuck than you seem to think.

I fail to see the connection between her post and the article.

Straws are more sanitary than slathering your lips on a cup that countless other people have slobbered on before you.
Or, you've been given a disposable cup, which itself is an environmental disaster in the making.

The end result, is just going to people in california keeping a handful of straws on his or her person, unless that starts being criminal - then maybe steel straws will catch on or something.

It doesn't matter one bit if your lips are touching the same glass other people have used. It's been washed and sanitized. And even still, whatever you're drinking is in the cup with whatever supposed germs anyway so it's already mixed before the straw is even used

Am I stereotyping if I picture people from California, or at least southern California, using a straw while drinking from a soda can and or bottle?

I always use a straw if there is ice in my beverage. I also hate it when they give you a lemon with your water if you don't say anything. If I want a lemon with my water I will specifically say so.
