I don't see the problem with it. They can easily other non-plastic straws, reusable straws, or just wait until a customer requests a straw.

This law doesn't ban straws. It bans restaurants from providing straws by default, but they can still give people straws if they ask for them.

It doesn't even go that far. They can offer straws by default, if they aren't made of plastic, or they are reusable.

Straws are more sanitary than slathering your lips on a cup that countless other people have slobbered on before you.

I have never understood this. I have met so many people that, when we go to a restaurant, will actively avoid sipping on the rim of a cup because "other people have sipped on it"

Yet I'll bring up that they have no problem using forks and spoons that other people ate off of and to this day I have yet to actually get a good response as to why one bothers them more than the other.

Plastic cups are more porous than metal utensils, and 'casual dining' restaurants don't seem to keen on using glass for some reason.

The other side of that, of course, is the stigma of asking for a straw at a "classy" restaurant.

I'm all for using less plastic but it's completely unrealistic to impose a regulation like this without an existing infrastructure to support that regulation.

For example, if we banned petrol cars and said you must all have hydrogen fuel cell cars or 100% electric then without easy access to hydrogen fuel the way there's a petrol station on every corner you're implementing a dumb law.

now if straws made from resin were as common as plastic ones are, then sure, go ahead and ban the plastic ones.

I would think voluntarily going to get your own straw counts as asking for them.

the issue is servers who just stick straws in drinks before they even get to your table.

Thus, turning your favorite sit down restaurant into a McDonalds. Ive never personally had that happen. Typically, there is either one laying on the table when I get to the restaurant, or I am asked if I want one.

Or here's an idea. Point out there's a cost savings in not offering straws (or other incidental items) to people that don't want them and watch money grubbing businesses do it of their own free will without getting the law involved.

the cost is so negligibly cheap that it's pointless.

there is also a cost savings in not serving water unless it's asked for, both because you save water and second because you won't have to wash a second cup if they ask for soda or beer but everyone still gives out water anyway.

You think it would matter? There's stories about an old bigwig at Marvel comics so cheap he tried to keep people from needlessly tossing out paper clips. It's not a large savings for sit down restaurants, but every bit helps, and it could do rather well for take out fast food.

I've heard of companies being aware of/controlling the amount of things like napkins and ketchup packets that they give to customers in the name of cost savings. I'm not really sure why it would be any different for straws to be honest

I doubt very many customers would be lost if restaurants change their process from immediately giving a straw to "would you like a straw with that" TBH

Especially if basically everyone has to do it.
