If they're solid Pokemon with a variety of types and moves, and you stock up on healing items, you should be able to pull it off without overleveling. But when you're using only 3 Pokemon for the whole game, chances are they'll end up at least a little bit overleveled even without trying to.

Just curious, which 3 Pokemon are you thinking of trying this with, and for which game?

I feel like the fewer the pokes, the easier the game because they get so overlevelled.

Empoleon master race here. Sweeped the Elite Four in Pokemon Diamond with only my starter on my first playthrough.

I've done it with Typhlosion on Gold/Silver/Crystal and Blaziken on X.

Slowking, Lucario, Mightyena. Platinum.

Slowking and Lucario are both solid since they can learn a wide variety of attacking moves (Slowking on the special side, Lucario on the physical side or maybe mixed) and cover each other's weaknesses pretty well. Slowking can also learn Thunder Wave via TM to slow the enemy down and sometimes cost them a turn.

Mightyena is beyond shit though. You'd honestly have an easier time doing it with just Slowking and Lucario and not wasting any effort and experience on Mightyena.
