there is a Magic the Gathering youtuber (i don't remember his name, not worth my time) who does your typical "drama" stuff by being aggressive towards female cosplayers at events, your usual jerk who does jerk stuff people find entertaining and makes lots of ad revenue.

Well because Wizards of the Coast banned him from events, this guy went out of his way to try and take down Wizards of the Coast. He first researched a whole bunch of DCI judges, finding their crime history, and spammed all those in a sex registry to give Wizards a bad image.

Now since DCI judges are not Wizards staff, they pass the responsibility onto the store.

So now my store has to pay for background checks if anyone wants to judge at our events.

Fortunately all my staff are L1-L2 judges already, but I feel bad for anyone that owns a store and has to deal with this crap by proxy ._.

Also, I was informed that "guy" still does MtG unboxing and review videos, so he is obviously exploiting an Internet army for his own personal profit.

Let that be a lesson to you kids: don't listen to anyone on the Internet, they are using you ;)

^ Ditto, but its a shame someone is profiting off of it. I would be fine with paying for background checks, but would be much better if that was Wizard's responsibility. Fortunately Wizards has not had any actual incidents reported of sexual assault by their judges.

The Pokemon Company pays for background checks for their high level professors of I recall.

The only thing that changed now is instead of Wizards defending law suits, local business owners now have to defend against law suits.

So just like EMV credit cards in America, Visa/Mastercard passed the blame to the business owners :)

With the way the judge program is growing along with the game, I feel like something like this was always inevitable.

It's obnoxious, but most of the stores I've attended have staff as judges anyway.

Jeremy Hambly is the name, He is a dumbass shitlord with a terrible youtube channel, But I still recommend people look into the whole situation because of how poorly Wizards handled it. There is a lot unsubstantiated claims regarding Jeremy such as him 'being aggressive towards female cosplayers at events' as well as Christine Sprankle's actual motivation. All in all, I think the situation was handled very unfairly for Jeremy regardless of how I think of him as a person.

Wizards didn't handle it that bad. There's precedent in bullying being the reason for a suspension.

In addition, Jeremy doesn't actually play at sanctioned events, so banning him does nothing but make a statement that they aren't putting up with ****.

They did handle it poorly because they should have stopped after making their original statement before the banning. They originally published a statement telling players their stance on bullying and harassment at events, and that people's recourse should be notifying a judge / tournament organizer / shop owner. This was a perfect response to the issue.

Then they handed down the lifetime ban and the seizure of his MTGO account. Which is the thing I have a problem with, This is ultimate punishment in two arenas that are entirely separate from the harassment of him making videos saying she takes advantage of people through patreon. If he was confirmed to have harassed people at events and over MTGO, or even if the ban was lighter, then I would feel differently.

And like you said, The lifetime ban isn't even a solution to the perceived problem. It was an extreme show of force for little reason other than flexing but sets a bad precedent for banning people for unrelated reasons.

I haven't really looked into this since the original happening, so if more instances of his harassment have come to light, I apologize.

MTGO account, I agree with you.

As far as events go though, banning people from events is essentially the only thing they have in their power. Like, certain types of tournament fraud lead to bannings, even though it's related to the TO as an organizer and not as a player. Or like when people got banned for leaking things, that had nothing to do with their conduct AT events.

No one ever showed that he "harassed" that cosplayer if I remember correctly. The most he ever did was criticize her and scantily clad cosplayers in general, who may or may not really be fans of whatever property they're dressing up as.

And apparently there's a prevalence of sexual offenders and pedophiles who are their game judges. So if someone lit a fire under their asses to help rectify that... then good.

The way they did this was by releasing the public information for most people in the judge program and then trying to cross reference that with sex offender lists.

No one is bemoaning that they those people can't judge any more, and in the past when it's been brought to light that someone has that in their past, they've been decertified.

The issue is that not all judges are store employees. It's like requiring Gamefaqs to run background checks on their mods. For some, prohibitively costly, and to fix a non-existent problem.

It's not as if we're talking about cases where players were molested/raped at events by these judges.

It's not so much Jeremy that caused the checks to be required, it was Wizards that set the precedent of banning people with criminal pasts. Jeremy just called attention to it (and the added bonus of them being judges) as payback. The guy is a d-bag but this is something that Wizards should have been on top of a long time ago. Especially with the way they try to straddle the line of judges not being employees while still getting them to work for them.

But Wizards isn't doing the background checks. They're forcing stores to do it.

Also, what does "being on top of it" mean? They (and the judges association) always respond quickly to such allegations. In addition, judges don't work for Wizards. They work for stores, even if they are certified by WotC.
