Considering half of the US falls under the first two voting options, I don't think most people here have tens of thousands set aside.

What costs $5000 a month? Is most of that just housing related?

Few aspects.

Our mortgage is 2300/mo PITI.

Utilities, Internet, Prime, Netflix, Car Insurance, Spotify, it all adds up

Then there's home repairs, a never ending series of "one time" costs

And the rest is luxuries

Should've made the categories more like:

0-$100,000
$100,000-$500,000
$500,000-$2,000,000

etc

My mortgage, two car payments, insurance, phones, utilities, internet, gym, security system, groceries and gas is about $2700 a month.

I can't imagine having another $2300 in just necessities, but several of my bills are pretty low.

he specifically excluded investments, so he is basically asking how much money is in your emergency fund. that fund should be somewhere around 3-6 months of expenses. and there are very few people who have $16k+ of expenses each month.

no, you should be investing the money above your 3-6 month emergency fund, unless you have some other intent with that money (like saving for a downpayment on a house). if you have $100k sitting in your bank account with no near term goals for more than half of that, you are mishandling your money.

Combination of things.

Medical bills (thankfully had insurance or I'd still be paying them)
Car repairs
And our apartment flooded and destroyed a bunch of our furniture, and renters insurance didn't cover it and the apartment complex wouldn't reimburse us either so we had to go buy a bunch of new shit.

Shit still comes up because life is a bitch so I don't have 3-6 months saved yet, but I've started to treat $1000 as if it were $0.

Also had about 10k in credit card debt at the time. All maxed out. So it was an awful couple of weeks having literally nothing and freaking out about what the fuck we'd do if something came up.

Just a little bit of credit card debt now that's at 0% interest for another year and a half so I'm not worried about that, and about $1500 in savings. Even that makes me anxious as hell even though I know I'm better off than pretty much everyone I know.
