I'm really not that into them. I might have a fun time playing them when I do if we've got a good set of people. But I have to spend the first half learning how the game actually works. And I never really find myself caring what the outcome will be. Winning the game never feels very rewarding. It's just over.

My brother bought the 3rd edition of Rune Bound and hated the token system (though I didn't mind) since he's played the 2nd edition a lot with friends so he went and bought a 2nd edition so now we have both though we don't play them unfortunately.

I mostly have some more casual games.
Trains, Risk Legacy, Codenames, Tsuro, Galaxy Trucker, Ticket to Ride, Escape: Curse of the Temple, and Formula: D.

I really like Secret Hitler and Bloodborne though.

I'm also pretty big into card games (like the standard deck), I'm not sure what it is, but I like just having them on hand.

Really? When I played it we had a bad time.

First hour nobody was a cylon, so everything went smoothly and we spent an hour just sort of putting along and we all got bored. I wanted to call outside assistance to confirm there was no cylon at the time, but then it ruins the whole point of it.
Second hour, when the flip happened, there was a fun game of "can we survive this" for a few rounds, but then the first cylon trashed a mission (fair enough), and we all sent him away. Then we realized that we found the second cylon (the player even admitted so), but we didn't want to throw him away because he could do more damage outside of the ship than inside so we brought a cylon on missions with us because we were so close anyway.

At the end we all agreed it was kinda dumb how it turned out, and there are weird rules about what you can or can't say or talk about. It just sort of felt like a traitor game with all of the social aspects replaced with mechanics that weren't all that fun.

It was probably just the single game that I played that wasn't good, but it's the only game that I played, and it really soured me on the whole thing.

The social circle I played with no longer exists, but I did really love Axis & Allies Miniatures. I spent about $2000 collecting the first five sets. They implemented a scale change after that. Between the pieces changing and the player pool drying up, I dropped it. I kept my stuff though, as I have enough to field proper games on any front for both people. It uses a hex-based map with information cards and plastic pieces. Dice rolls determine the outcomes of things. It's a well-made game. Normally I considered that stuff pretty lame and avoided it, but it's sort of in between something like Risk and full-blown A&A or DnD, where it's manageable and easy to pick up and play a quick game with but still somewhat advanced in terms of its ruleset, and you need to be mindful of strategy. Each unit costs points, so something like a King Tiger will eat into your numbers heavily... Out of pity, my wife is willing to battle me on occasion, which is nice.

Dice were my friend in it though. I had one where my friend threw a borderline tantrum because my Chinese Nationalist army beat his Imperial Japan. To put this into perspective, China's forces are so inferior that they have exclusive limitations no other army does (iirc): if you roll three 1's with an MG team, the gun jams and misses a turn, if a tank is damaged it can no longer move for the remainder of the game (other factions just suffer a minor penalty to attack and defense), and if their infantry are disrupted (a one-turn marker that weakens them for everyone else) they just die instead. China also lacks an air force. The trade-off was that I outnumbered him by about three-to-one. Halfway through, we traded dice because I was tired of him whining. Nothing changed. The KMT were rocking it for that fight... What's ironic was that I only opted to play that match because I beat him 90% of the time and figured it would be a fun struggle for me and give him a sorely needed win in his column. It just made it worse losing to such a weak foe. I don't think I ever lost as Germany. The odd time I was defeated it was when playing as the Western Allies. Their equipment just didn't suit my play style as well as the countries that use all quantity or all quality.

A large part of the game is based on randomness yes, but, yes, first games usually go underwhelmingly well, or overwhelmingly terrible. Having a group that likes the "traitor" mechanic is also important.

I guess my favorites are Scrabble and Monopoly. I know that by current standards Monopoly is a "bad" game (e.g., it takes forever to end "naturally", and while it's not your turn you're just sitting around), but I can't help finding it fun.

But I'm always willing to learn new board or card games, if I'm playing with people on about my level.

I got into it about two years go now. Started as me liking thematic games, but now my favorites tend to be middle to middle-heavy Eurogames. But I've been trying to get into Twilight Struggle to expand my knowledge of wargames but I don't think I have the time to devote to it. Had fun playing it yesterday with a friend (though I lost, badly).

It also doesn't help that my local game scene really sucks. They play every week down there but they are not very welcoming of newcomers. I recently stopped going because there is only one or two people that get their games played.

I very much like board games. I'm trying to slowly corrupt my wife with nerdiness using them. We just finished Pandemic Legacy: Season 1 with our friends, and I can't recommend that highly enough. Other favorites of ours are Lords of Waterdeep, 7 Wonders, Covert, Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle, and DC Deck Building Game.

I bought the Kickstarter for the base game and expansion of a game called Expedition and that's finally about to ship soon. It's like a DnD lite where your phone acts as the DM and the dice. It should be a good way to introduce my wife to roleplaying games and bring her closer to nerdiness. My ultimate goal is to one day play a real session of DnD or another true roleplaying game with her. Other men have their fantasies about what they want their wives to do. I have mine.

I'll never get the appeal of legacy games. They're like a job. You got to sit down and schedule a time to play, getting everyone on board. My attempt at doing Risk Legacy totally failed. It was played four times and two of the players just didn't like it... so now I have this board game that is partially completed that I can't get anyone else to play.
